KTX goes the same speed.

I hope you are joking or at the very least, trolling...

No I'm not. I'm not saying that when we travelled on the Maglev it was going at its top speed, as its a relatively short piece of track, but we have a picture (sad I know)) of the speedometer which we clocked at 300Kmh, which is the same speed as the KTX we took from Daegu to Seoul a week or so ago.

With a longer track, I'm sure the Maglev will go faster, but between Shanghai and the airport, I think 300Kmh is as much as you're gonna get out of it.

maglev...the main speed advantage is on curves. Trains usually break on curves...one being that they don't derail, and the other that objects...trains in this case have more wind resistance when the train is on a curve. Maglev doesn't derail...and can accelerate on a curve because the driving force is equal. In high speed rail, the banked tracks mean more torque is on the outside rail. Maglev is equal and thus higher acceleration is possible.

I saw something recently about running a train track underneath the Atlantic linking Europe and the US. Imagine the speeds a Magnetic train could reach over that sort of distance.

Nope. I was on the Maglev last month, and it got up to 428Kmh...that's moving!!! I'm sure it's faster than KTX. They say it's the fastest train in the world. It gets you from Pudong Airport to Longyang station in 8 minutes. I took a pic of the outside as it was moving at top speed. I thought Shanghai was awesome! I will say this also...there were tons of people and no one was psuhing and shoving. It was also Lunar New Year, which means the city was all decoratd up for the holiday, and fireworks were going off every night in the streets. I also went to a newly opened club that kicks any Seoul nightclub's bum. Not to mention, the live music scene in Shanghai kicks Seoul's bum, too.

上海人常常不好心所以我不喜欢去上海, 很多的中国人也觉得。
Shanghai is often bad heart Therefore, I do not like to go to Shanghai, a lot
of Chinese people also feel that.

Shanghai is like Pittsburgh or Chicago in that that the most beautiful part of the city is the center of it while it is ringed by slums and drab apartment blocks filled with migrant workers from the western provinces.
That is certainly the place to wear a money belt around the inside of your shirt and never put anything in your pockets because you WILL be pickpocketed when you get off the bus or subway...........

Other than that, I would have to agree with the princess- it is indeed a kickass place to be---

428Kmh? Really? Wow, that was shifting. I rode it just after Xmas and while it only took us 8-minutes, it only hit 300Kmh.

Very close. 不错儿 actually means 'not bad,' but the 儿 is a slang ending used in Beijing. But by 'not bad' I mean 'quite right,' which is one of the meanings in Mandarin.

Seems like there is a theme of it being a bit 'slummish'...but, can't help but wonder, is that any different from any other city in Asia (outside of Japan, HK, SG)?

I only visited briefly, but it seemed all right to me, but I'm living in a boring place. There's a lot going on in Shanghai. Easy to spend money there I reckon. Easy for those like me who are language-impaired. Good food and bar options. I also got a sore neck looking at attractive girls, and not only Chinese ones.

The big shopping street reminded me a bit of Japan actually, what little I know that is.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay, then you might like to consider The Eton in Pudong. It's amazing and very, very reasonably priced. Ask for a room with a view of the river and the skyline. It's amazing.Arrow

Reasonably priced at only $350 USD a night....how much are you making?

Check the date when I posted that. It wasn't $350 then. It'd only been opened about 6-months and was largely empty.

You're post has just reminded me how cool Shanghai is/was. I'd love to go back. I think anyone who's taken the trouble to insert themselves in Asia for a year, albeit South Korea, could do a lot worse than to blow some of their hard earned won in Shanghai. Definitely a city in the ascendancy.
