spending $1200 for a couple of days of entertainment is obscene, crass and tasteless, to say the least.
no doubt your children will grow up to believe it is their duty and right to flaunt economic superiority over others despite the fact they are no different than anyone else; needless to say, guess where they will learn that lesson from - 
I also fail to see how someone that spends 4 years in an entirely different culture yet doesn't think it's somehow necessary to broaden his horizons by learning more about the world around him through travel is exhibiting knowledge of class simply by paying an extravagant price for unnecessary items on an airliner. |

Furthermore, understanding how to budget one's travel in order to broaden one's education and enlighten one's self as to how people actually live in this world; to see and experience cultures and societies different than where one has been raised is a positive characteristic in a human being.
To express such flippant remarks as "the backpackers crawl out of the woodwork" is nothing short of ignorance and does not bode well with the concept that there are mostly teachers on this board.
Of all the people I've met in my entire life, and it's been pretty long so far, teachers are by far the most well-traveled and better educated for it.
Perhaps if you tried backpacking around a bit you might come to appreciate a side of life you haven't known before. But then, you might have to do without those necessary creature comforts you are so greedily attached to as well.  |

I once got bumped up to business class flying over from Canada b/c the flight was full....So, to test my luck on the way back to Canada for a vacation I asked if the flight was full and requested to change my seat...they put me in business class....cha-ching....
don't need to spend the $900...just ask!! |

MM2- sounds like you had a great flight home. Business class on international flights is a wonderful thing. There's a lot to be said for being woken with, "Excuse me, would you like some brandy with your breakfast, miss?"
I discovered that by dressing well, showing up just slightly late, and having an airline loyalty card I got about a 25-30% shot at getting a free upgrade. EVA air was pretty nice, Singapore Air service was wonderful, and Asiana wasn't bad though they were all rather short hops. I really learned to appreciate the space on the straight shot from Seoul to Toronto though. Who knew Air Canada was more than tolerable if they think you've got money? |

Actually... my school was going to pay for a direct return flight to NZ and as there is only one airline that goes direct (Korean Air) they charge the earth... so what I did was fly on Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong business class and only paid an extra 400,000 won!!! BUT even better... when I got back and turned in my request for a reimbursement (only expecting to get the amount of the economy direct flight)... my co-teacher winked at me and told me not to worry... as it turned out my supervisor 'loved' me and she reimbursed me for the business class trip NOT just the economy  so working hard and having a great rep as a good teacher in a small town does pay off!! |

| I just have to wonder how comfortable those seats are even for tall people. I'm a tall woman and I've never enjoyed a plane ride. When I left Korea in December I didn't sleep at all on the plane ride back. If the business class (or 1st class) is good for even tall people I might think about doing it at least once, especially if I have something I need to be rested for when I arrive at my destination. |

Long 'n' short of it was I was exactly where I wanted to be. Seoul. And I was being paid to be there. If I was in Canada, I'd be heading there for holiday anyway. Really, when I get time off anywhere I just prefer to explore the city in which I live. Look at the picture to the left. Why would I want to be away from that, ever?

TRUST me... I have the same problem and the seats in business class are soooo much better than economy!!!! Most airlines now have 'pods' that stand alone (not paired with another seat) and you can recline all the way down to a sleeping position (like on a bed)... the best I've flown on so far is Air NZ business, but Cathay was good too... Thai a little older and the seats were not the new 'pods'... I have yet to try Singapore Airlines but I've read the most recent surveys and they are still number 1 in the world for economy and business. I think you should try it ... at least once! And if your school reimburses you the cost of a direct flight then you just pay the difference which (if you don't take a direct business flight) is not gonna be much... its worth it!  |

Maybe you're unaware, but you're not exactly unique.
The second type of white person travel is Third World. This is when they venture to Thailand, Africa or South America. Some do it so that they can one up the white people who only go to Europe.
But like with Europe, white people like to believe they are the first white people to make this trip. As such, they should be recognized as special and important individuals.
That�s right, by going to a country, riding around on a bus or train, staying at a hotel or hostel and eating - they are doing something important for the world.
If a white person shows up in your country, you can make them feel fantastic by saying how you�ve never seen a white person before, and that you are amazed by their iPod - �a device that plays many songs? impossible!�
They might give it to you, then you can sell it for profit. Repeat as necessary.
