You are getting upset over a ten-year-old incident, an incident that the Clintons and McCains seem to have put behind them, an incident that desperate and drowning journalists are raising to call off the heat that they have brought onto themselves with their "pimping out" commentary...

We should keep our eye on the ball.

I'm not getting upset, but I did find myself recoiling. And if this is only a ten-year-old incident, that means McCain (no spring chicken) had still long been of an age where he should have known better. Where is the wisdom and maturity that should come with age? Where is the compassion for a much younger person, a child? If I were an American voter, I would have great misgivings about a man who would stoop to that, even if he were a leftie . Wink

Well we all know how unlikely that would be, Big_Bird. All lefties are full of always-knowing-better, wisdom, maturity, and compassion. Only those of us who are not lefties lack these things, no?

What a mischeivous little gopher you are. Laughing Actually, some 'lefties' are absolute arseholes...

Very well, then. Let us prosecute McCain.

Kuros: you are the law student. Where exactly did McCain commit this offense and what is the statute of limitations on bad jokes in that state?

I really can't believe some of the posts I'm reading here. The American public is most concerned with the War, the economy, health care, and immigration to name a few top issues. To think that somehow a crude remark drawing attention to the ugliness of a kid ten years ago would make it more difficult for a candidate to deal with these issues is...well, absurd. I'm not saying McCain is the best guy to deal with these issues, but if one did believe so, I don't know why one would choose not to vote for him because of some joke he made and apologized for 10 years ago. America has some serious problems that need to be dealt with. A ten-year old joke is not one of them.

I swear I remember some arguing, back when Bill was turning the White House into a Rubensque version of the Playboy Mansion, that his affair was not that big of a deal because it didn't hinder him from doing his job. Incidentally, I wonder which indiscretion caused the Clinton family more pain?

I'm sure you meant "statute" rather than "statue." Not nitpicking, but I had to bring it up because it reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George gets Elaine to take an IQ test for him in Babu's new restaurant and Elaine argues with Kramer as to whether the correct term is "statue" or "statute." Yes, I watch too much TV.

Typo. But thanks for the correction.

I know someone who used to call "a moot point" "a mute point," by the way. Real life and not tv.

That's a common spelling error on memos and briefs. I've taken "statue" off my word processor's spell check.

I think its interesting with all this flap about what Obama's pastor has said and what Clinton's supporter has said, that we ought to contrast it to what McCain himself has actually said.

I was in HS when this happened, and I remembered the incident but I didn't know who McCain was at the time. When I saw this while reading an article (which linked to the blog post I linked to), I was a little surprised.

McCain has a history of these sorts of offensive outbursts, doesn't he?

I'm not suggesting that offensive statements are a crime, but certainly becoming President of the United States is anything but a citizen's right.

McCain has a temper and something of a mean streak. No ambiguity on this point.
