I know there are some fitness gurus on Dave's and would appreciate your input ....
I recently strained my shoulder (muscle or ligament?) from a military press (dumbbells) exercise and need some input on recovery. My gut tells me its minor but the shoulder joint ain't too be messed with ... I'm concerned I may have damaged something more seriously?
Do sports specific physical therapists exist in Korea? |

Uh-oh, I hope it's not a rotator cuff injury. Did you do any of the following? Behind-the-neck lat bar pull downs, dips, upright rows, heavy benching? Are you not doing a proper warm up/stretching routine?
I strained my rotator cuff years ago. I was incline benching, and when I was finished, I didn't have anyone to put the weights back on the rack, so I was stretching my arms back - not good.
If you just hurt yourself, do not start with the physical therapy yet. Anytime I've gone to a doctor's office back home (rotator's cuff, tennis elbow, knee strain, etc.) They all say the same thing: "Take an anti-inflammatory for two weeks and rest." On your first day, take two pills and the rest of the days, one pill.
If it is a rotator's cuff issue, then you might have yourself a long recovery. (Even years after my injury, my shoulder still felt sensitive when I'd do those triceps pulldowns where you spread the rope.) There are different exercises that you can do if you look online. Some of them recommend a light dumbbell, but I wouldn't even go that heavy. My physical therapist recommended a heavy soup can. Best of luck. |

Thanks for your feedback. I scoured the Internet and it looks like I may have strained my rotator cuff. Your point about the physical therapy is very well taken; I'm going to do absolutely nothing for 1 month and then get back into light training.
Damn. |

Celery Man,
We have a Sports medicine Center at our hospital and a very good shoulder specialist, Dr. Nam Soo Jo.
I am hockey player and I like working out, but I have been plagued by shoulder problems since high school.
Thanks to the rehab at our center and Dr. Jo's expertise I am regaining strength that I thought was lost forever.
If you'd like a referral send me a pm. |
