Are DVD players in Korea region 1 or region 2?

I have a Korean notebook. Do you know if it's possible to use region 1 DVDs on it?

Korean DVD's are region 3. However, your korean computer should be able to play region 1 DVD's for a while. That is until the media program runs out of region free viewings.

If you know how to alter the registry or are some kind of computer wiz, then it should be no problem to have unlimited use of any DVD regardless of region. Keep in mind, I'm a couple of years out of date in my information on this and it's entirely possible that you can pick up a media player program that is region free.

Cheers

Look for a program called DVDIdle Pro. You order it online. It's about $30, tops. It knocks out macrovision and will play ALL Dvds - even those pesky Warner Bros and Universal ones tha DVD Genie might not handle.

DVD Genie is another program, but frankly I think it hasn't kept up with the anti-region firmware that the DVD manufacturers keep digging out.
Also, the newer DVD-R and RW some companies put in their notebooks are more resistant to DVD-Genie.

Cheers,

Joe

I want to buy a Sony notebook when I go home for chirstmas. I was told they only play region 1 DVD's. so I buy the notebook there, then install DVDIdle Pro, and I can then play DVD's here too?

For those who are technically minded, you can use an RPC-1/2 firmware hack for your DVD drive that unlocks the region restrictions. You will also need to install a software region hack, to get your media player to recognise the DVD.

This is rather seamless once it's up and running, but I haven't had experience with DVDIdle, so this may be a better solution. Thanks to Joe for the heads up.

One thing I forgot to mention in my OP was that the above process is free.

I found out that SOME DVDs sold here are All Region category. That's very cool. If Gwangju sells All Region DVDs then Seoul would too, and not just n the pirated section of Yongsan.

The Sony notebook dvd players go by the software first, you can change your region something like 5 times before it makes it perm. on your dvd player. (still not sure how that is done...) What I used to do is just reset that 5 time thing on my dvd software.

However, since I own about 70 region 3 dvds and like 10 region 1 dvds, I just keep it on region 3, and watch the region 1s in my stand alone dvd player (all region enabled).

Wireless internet is a pretty painless affair nowdays.

Buy a wireless base station; many routers come with this functionality.

You would then either buy a PCI wireless card (for your desktop) or a PCMCIA card (for your notebook).

As long as both have the same standard, usually 802.11b, then you should be good to go.

Tweak with the settings so that only known MAC (hardware) addresses are allowed on the router, otherwise you could get freeloading neighbours hitching a ride on your connection.. :)

Yeah, it's sorta OT, but kangnamdragon also asked about wireless networking, so I sorta did a quick rundown.

Sorry.

Last time I checked, Singles was not available yet.

Thanks for the info on wireless.....I hope the wireless notebook I buy in the States will work. How much does the base cost here in Korea?

All-region releases depend on the publisher in Korea. Bitwin releases seem to all be region free, as well as those by whoever released the 2-disc set of True Romance - I believe that one was done by Spectrum. I'll check when I get home.
