The train I was on pulled into Sam Song Stn in Ilsan (before Hwajeong) and I heard this loud screeching sound. I assumed it was the train but it kept going after the train stopped suddenly.
By then it was easy to figure out it was a woman screaming her lungs out. The train doors opened and all the Koreans made a dash towards the platform, rubbernecking and looking for the carnage.
Cue the paramedics, some dudes come running towards the hysterical woman. Other adjummas start screaming along with the woman and pointing below the train, yuck.
I knew it was a child because some women were in tears already and kept saying aggi blah blah blah aggi. Very sad.
I really didn't want to see the aftermath so I split and headed up the stairs to catch a taxi home.
Poor kid, I wonder if he/she survived. Did anyone happen to witness this or see anything on the news? It happened around 2pm this afternoon. |

i didn't witness it coz at around 2pm today i had my head down the toilet being sick.
on a slighty different note a lady got pushed by a homeless man at ewha station not so long ago. she died. i believe they are trialling platform doors that would stop this. you see them in evidence at singil subway station, just five or so doors being trialled on one of the platforms. |

I remember seeing those sort of platform doors at the subway station underneath Kuala Lumpur airport, I guess it's possible to install if you have a lot of money to spend on your system. I believe the Jubilee Line extention on the London Underground was fitted out with them.

And what would you suggest to stop it happening again, exactly? |

Let's say the following conversation took place at a bar, cafe, or restaurant:
A: I saw in the paper that some kid fell in front of a subway. Very sad.
B: Yeah. Those subways should have platform doors. Like in London.
C: Right. I've seen those things. Very futuristic.
D: Singapore has them too, but only for air-conditioning, I think.
I don't think anyone besides you, Play_Doh would consider this an offensive conversation. Can't you take your grandstanding pseudo-moralism somewhere else? |

Hong Kong subway system has the glass wall and doors that don't open until the train stops completely...smart but do you think the Koreans would buy the idea? The cost would be small considering all the suicides it would stop here... |

I'm seriously wondering about that kid. Does this kind of thing go unreported in Korea? Should I check Monday's Herald?
Did any of y'all Korean speakers see anything on the news?
Those subway doors might even teach Koreans to stand in line as well as prevent deaths. |

It is a surprisingly frequent occurance with the size of the system, but rarely reported in the paper. Twice I've seen this happen at Songnae Station (one accident, one deliberate), neither time made the paper. The only time I read about it was when there was a protest over the lack of elevators and decent handicapped access at many of the older stations which lead to the 200 strong riot police squad being sent out to break up a sit-in protest done by 12 people a couple days after one person had fallen onto the tracks.
The newspaper story about the protest said 50-some people were killed on the subway system last year in suicide attempts alone. Though the Korean newspapers are generally larger than the English language editions, so I suspect they are more likely to mention accidents on the subway. |

No, they would just be pushing each other from an earlier point in time.
By the way, I had to teach the verb, "push" in class the other day. I had 5 kids stand randomly in the middle of the floor, and I bent over and pushed them around with my elbows as I passed -- saying I was an ajumma on the subway.
Everyone -- especially the 3 Korean teachers watching -- died laughing. All started to join in, too. Ha! |

Very, very sad. Quite a few years ago a beautiful young woman was pushed in front of a subway train in Toronto during a rush hour period. Before she died she asked a policeman at the scene to tell her mother she didn't jump...it wasn't suicide. Some sick asshole pushed her onto the tracks.
The cop quit his job shortly following the incident.
How to prevent it from happening? I never stand close enough to the edge of the platform to become one of these statistics. This young child in question? Didn't hear anything about it, but I would imagine it was simply a child being curious and playful, but made a fatal mistake. Very, very unfortunate...
Stay a safe distance back from the yellow line at all times people.

I haven't seen this in Korea (second day here) but I did in Toronto, though that was someone jumping in front of a train Hell of an awful way to commit suicide if you ask me. |
