| Yeah I think Macquarie and USQ are getting the degree mill reputation. It's a shame too,I spoke with an Aussie chick during holiday and she said they're doing some good stuff on campus at Macquarie. Sounds like the online program might drag their name through the mud though. |

I know a few Korean teachers who received their MA's on campus from "Macquirie" (sp?) and they could barely speak or read, let alone write in English. How they obtained with a graduate degree is beyond me? |
That's incredible. How could they have written and passed the distance M.A. course through that university? I don't understand. |

| Let me clarify; they said they took the course ON CAMPUS! Mystifying! In fairness, I took them at their word, so perhaps they were lying. The most annoying aspect was how they would laud their graduate degree over the rest of the staff. |

The reputation of USQ is becoming so bad these days, I wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole. |

| Er, the only thing I know about people with USQ MA's is that they get promotions and raises. I'd touch that with a 10 foot pole. |

Same same, a masters in applied linguistics is well...a masters in applied linguistics. Unless they are giving them away in weetbix packets, i'm willing to go with whoever regardless of academic snobbery. |

Here's a new question I have:
What is (are) the difference(s) between an MA in TESOL and an MA in Linguistics? What about a "Master of Science in Education (TESOL Concentration)" offered by the aforementioned SU?
They all seem more or less the same... |

| -an MA in linguistics means you are gay and worship chomsky as a God. Or if not gay, a woman. Heteromen are not linguists, cunning or otherwise. They can get an MA in TESOL however. |

But seriously... anyone?
Also, if an MA is enough to teach at universities worldwide, why do people get PhDs? |

| I graduated from SU way, way back in 2000. I completed the MSEd TESOL in 3 semesters-fall, winter, and spring. I officially graduated in August 2000 as that is SU's official graduation ceremony time... I worked my buns off and do not recommend doing the 3-semester route. Between student teaching, school, working evenings, and doing homework until the wee hours, it was a rough 1.5 years. |
3 semesters? WOW you were in a rush!!!! Yes, I would NOT recommend doing this program in 3 semesters unless you work less than 10 hours a week. One cannot get by this program just writting a bunch of crap. They really need to study and learn the material. This, is, a Master's program after all and not a diploma mill. Thank you for your insight Cangel. |
He went there during the good ole' days.
IMO almost any student entering the program during the current situation, where a new director is taking over and changing the program, will be in for some serious frustration.
The transition happening is quite a rocky one.
The program is trying to get steered in the direction of becoming a research based entity, like Birmingham, although will never be a Uni of Birmingham if you get my drift.
Gone are the days of practical teacher course work and course work portfolios with this place, which is once what made the program (and place) shine. |
