Anyone know when the second semester starts this year?
I notice that September 1st is a Monday, which is when my new contract will start. I'm asking because I'm planning on going back home in August and just wandered if this 'other' week in May that many of us are getting off will mean that the start date for semester 2 will be brought forward a week, or whether semester 1 wil be extended for a week.
Hope that makes sense. It is Sunday morning after all. |

If your contract says September 1, that's when you start.
According to my PS's timetable, semester 2 starts on 28 August (a Thursday!) for us - a GEPIK school. We don't get that extra week in May, but we have a few extra "school holidays" throughout the year, an extra day in may, 3 for Chuseok etc. |

Sure, but I'm more concerned as to whether or not I'll need to be back in school during the last week of August as opposed to the first week of September as the last week of August will still be part of my current contract and if they want me back in, then its going to mess up my vacation plans. |

If your contract starts on the 1st September don't you have a two week break and paid return journey back to England prior to this date? This is usually the case when you re-sign?
If not then negotiate this time off when your school wants to talk about re-signing.
I know you're an EPIK but a partly private one. So if you have this break then you can probably book off the whole of August. |

Yeah, I'm contracted for 14-days summer holiday and I'll be trying to rinse an additional week or two out of them, but I'm more concerned that they may agree to my requests etc but stipulate that I need to be back in time for the start of term, hence why I keen to find out just when semester 2 starts this year.
So far, they've been excellent and I'm sure that if semester 2 does start during the last week of August then they'll still let me return at the beginning of September as I have specific plans for the last week of August, plans which don't involve me being back in Korea. |

I expect your contract stipulates your home leave is meant to be taken the last 2 weeks of your contract. I think theres a clause in mine that says alternate dates can be set with agreement from both parties (but I dont have it at hand right now). First week back is often a light schedule anyway so I imagine you could politely insist on the return date you want.
Your school year neednt be a mystery -- ask for a copy of the school calendar. My school, fwiw, starts up again thursday august 21. |

^Just out of interest schwa, did you get an extra vacation on top of your contracted holiday for resigning? |

My GEPIK contract says I get 5 extra days for renewing my contract. |

Wow, GEPIK's cheap. EPIK set the bar years ago at 2 weeks extra home leave on re-contracting & I figured all the PS programs had followed suit. |
