Hi Everyone,

My American friend is selling me his car, and I'm wondering if there's a special protocol for buying cars from private owners in South Korea?

Do I just pay for the automobile, get it insured, and register it?

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Well, I have no idea how that works if it's a SOFA vehicle. You might have to pay some huge tax or something to register it, if it is. Maybe somebody military will answer, but it's something to be wary of.

Last year we bought our car from an American friend, he fixed all the papers by himself at USO, then he endorsed the car to us with the transfer of ownership and certificate of title of motor vehicle..then afterwards you will proceed to car inspection(W20,000) somewhere in Mapo visit this site www.kotsa.or.kr for the exact location ask a Korean for help.

Of course the car must be insured, after the car inspection you can register into your nearest gu office, it's easy as long as you have all the required documents,we paid about W120,000 for the registration and , then they will issue your new license plate number..That's it..Drive carefully Razz

Oh there is also a fee every six months that comes in the mail. Watch for it. It's a tax of some kind, and I think it was around 70,000 won last time I paid.

Then there is a vehicle inspection every 2 or 3 years that you cannot miss, or you pay fines up the ying-yang. You are alerted of that by mail as well, so make sure all of your addresses are updated!

Nope, it's a Korean made car sold to my friend by a Korean and then passed it to me.
