I'm beginning to think that Koreans don't have a clue how to market themselves to foreigners.

The latest example involves Arirang, their English channel. Increasingly, it can only be found on cable. I don't get it; don't they want as many foreigners to view it as possible? In China, they have CCTV-9, which is free and omnipresent, even broadcast overseas.

In their feeble attempt to host a Winter Olympics, they neglected to make most of their presentations in English, unlike their competitors? The prize went to Russia instead.

And then there is the marketing wonder of tourism. Where do they get these slogans: "sparkling," "Seoul: Soul of Asia," "It's Daejoen," "Dynamic Korea," etc.?

And the Korean Airlines commercial is about as lame as they come.

Do they even put forth more than a half-hearted effort? Is the fault of gyopos in high places, or not enough of gyopos in high places, or what?

So much of their publicity seems to be ill-conceived and about as exciting as watching jello get hard, if one could do that.

Korea must be a nightmare to market.

Non existent English skills among the general public
Very far away: long journey and expensive air fare
One dimensional cuisine
Abundant in-your-face nationalism
Very little to see in the capital
Totally different culture and mindset that could easily make the wrong impression to someone coming for say a week (eg spitting, pushing ajumas etc)
Negative impression created by, amongst other things, dog meat, the clone doctor, choi the killer, a divided country.

Have any of you got the lonely planet for Korea? They really lay into Korea, Korean people and Korean culture in that book. It was like something off of Dave's.

on that note i was invited to the korean publicity event in London for the promotion of the Korea sparkling campaign. It was abysmal. Most of the people there were korean / other asian (it was near china town). The events were so lame like traditional music that was drowned out by the london traffic, b-boy stuff that wasnt impressive (looked like tap dancing to me) and taekwondo guys doing pretty basic, standard techniques.

Best of all it was sandwiched between a Nike freestyle football event and the Hindu festival Diwali and there were still promotional material for both of them everywhere.

No, they don't. They really have no clue. There is a huge market for people who have one or two clues on how to make quality products and then market them. That's where I come in.

And then they give me money.

I agree if you just came here to visit for a week you might not get the best impression but I have been here for a year and I think this should be the new marketing video for a little town that I live near check it out.

I will when I get hold of my friend's copy, or purchase my own one for the rip off price that we are charged in Korea. Im surprised the PC police / Korean netizens haven't brought it up actually.

Watch this space....

The mystique of North Korea is what keeps SK on the map; and Samsung. We also have the best break dancers in the world. The urgency behind LMB's grand canal (gimmick) makes alot more sense now. Did I mention we boast the world's best bboy crew?
