I was in the back with the other guys who weren't up to the challenge of mastering a wind instrument. It was fun, we whacked the hell out of big bass drums, and the snare drum of course, and the xylophone (I confess I never really learned how to play it, but anyway) shook things that made different noises, and ooh, the triangle...holy crap, not that impressive...man, I could have done so much more, what the hell was I thinking back then.

Sunday night and who knows why, but I got to thinking about this, back in the day, when I was young and unambitious. Ah, mediocrity... Very Happy But I'm past that now.

Ambitious enough to whack on different things with sticks? Smile

I played trumpet - and, on occasion, the oboe-trumpet, which I invented when I discovered that oboe reeds fit perfectly into my lead pipe.

Percussion. Played in the Jazz Band; even went to band camp once.

Best part, though, was our rock-band. We played a couple school events, but the best times were playing the local parties...I remember I was 16 and the older guys [think Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused] in their 20's came up while we were playing and gave us beer; they even passed the hat for us once.

In Grade 4 I played second trombone (of three) in the elementary school band made up mostly of grade 5 and 6 students. I hated being in the group as the youngum but we had few trombone players in the school and I had been playing since Grade 2 and was better than all but one of the older of the brass.

Then, halfway through Grade 5 my family moved to another town and my new school was just starting the recorder and ukulele. Rolling Eyes And when I got to junior high in Grade 8 they don't let you pick your own instrument, not until Grade 11, so I never played in a band ever since, though I would've loved to.

Played 2nd (2nd of 2!) French Horn in grade 8. The other girl had played for about a year or so before me, but it wasn't long before I was as good - if not better (I'm feeling oh-so humble this morning) than she was. Dropped it after only 1 year, though, and I still regret it. Still get nostalgic when I hear those sweet, brassy peals...

First alto sax. Was in the concert band, jazz band, jazz combo, and rock band. Total geek. But those were the best days. I think I spent more time in the music room than anywhere else in high school. Oh yeah, and I did go to band camp. My friends laugh at that, but it was a great time!

I played (and still do) the tuba since grade 6. I remember the conductor coming down to our elementary school in grade 5 to recruit (get an idea) to see who would be interested in joining the band the next year. You had your typical responses, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, etc. and then I piped up that I wanted to play the tuba to which the conductor said great as he needed another tuba player.
Strange how I actually came to choose the tuba. I heard the A&W Root Beer song on tv, you know with the bear dancing around the screen and I remember hearing some strange instrument playing it. I asked my mother what it was and she said the tuba, and that's how I chose. He had me start off on Baritone purposely as it's hard to begin on tuba, then I switched a year later. About 5 years ago I bought my own instrument (3 million won) and joined the Bundang Wind Orchestra. I've been lazy as of late as I'm just too busy but played right up until last year. It's a great experience and I love the power of the tuba, plus the adrenaline rush when playing in front of an audience is a real rush.

I played oboe in band and the trumpet in jazz band and I am heartbroken that I never thought to try this out myself.... Crying or Very sad

Also played flute in music class because our teacher insisted we play different instruments for the challenge.

At my school the guys in band were about as cool as the students who served as office assistants.

Come to think of it though, those office assistants could at least forge you notes excusing absences.
