I am really frustrated and I don't know what to do.

I would really love a uni. job, but I am in the US. My boyfriend works for SMOE, but it explicitly states in his contract that no one can live with him (and his villa owner is constantly coming to his apt), so I don't foresee myself being able to go over there early and staying with him whilst trying to find a job.

People have said public high school is a good route for me, but after reading tons of posts about not settling for less, I still feel unsure of what I should do.

I was thinking about flying over in June for a couple of weeks and apply to uni's in person, or try to set up interviews from home and see if I could get them all in the weeks I visit. Plane tickets are so expensive!

Whatever shall I do?

Take a Job with SMOE while you are searching for a UNI job.

Don't worry this is korea = ) rules are more like guidelines = )
I am at a PS an my GF flys in for 3mths at a time. she
isn't staying with me Cool she is just visiting Very Happy get it?

I don't know about your resume but.............Why is a PS school less than a University to you? and most GOOD universities want a MA and 2 years exp in Korea. All of this I have and I choose to stay at my PS. I would only "upgrade" to a university if it was one of the top five.............. other than that I have a good gig.

I also, think with the new regs flying in first isn't a good option anymore. I would have said it was THE ONLY OPTION for a good spot last year. IMHO

anyway good luck.

Um, less working hours and you can actually know where you are going before you get there?

OP, I gave up on jobhunting from overseas and played the EPIK lottery for a position in a random public school for my first year. You know at least one person in Korea though, so you have more options than I did. If you think it's worth it to pay for your own plane ticket to try for a better job, come and "visit" your BF for awhile and look for a job.

Every newbie wants that glorious university job because they heard about the 3,4,5 whatever months vacation. I'm currently at a public school and I do sufficient prep work. I find that draining as it is! Off course, I still ooh and ahhh when I hear of uni professors making X amoutn and having X amount of vacation, but it isn't for me. I prefer the ps route.

edit: You CAN know where you'll end up before going there (at least with GEPIK). I did. The reason I didn't go with EPIK was because they wouldn't tell me where I'd end up working/living. It was too adventurous for me to just hop on the plane and see where I ended up.

I was thinking of that, but I'd really hate to go that route because If I left SMOE, it would have to be in March of 2009. I wouldn't want to break my contract.

Plus, SMOE won't give letter of releases or something like that, I've heard, if you break a contract with them. I am sure they won't give letters of recommendation if that happened either.

My point is that in order to not screw anyone over, I need to pick either uni or PS now to avoid breaking a contract. The whole breaking a contract deal is a long story, but I have to leave Korea in March of 2010 to defend my MA thesis. And in any case, I don't like the idea of breaking a contract in general.

MB,

First off, there is no "illegality" or rules that state you can't live with your boyfriend. SMOE indeed has no such policy that I'm aware of and I know innumerable couples "shacked up". Don't let this stand in your way but also keep an open channel of communication with all those involved.

Why do you have to be "in situ" to defend a thesis? My god, it is 2008. Just get an Elluminate room , invite everyone and do it. I'm also curious about a master's program which has such guidelines about "defending" a thesis. Could be but I do believe this is a little too much...

When you are applying for jobs, let them know that you are looking for a short term contract. I had a wedding to go to so I told the employer upfront that I needed to leave after 8 months. I had no problems getting the job. Negotiate airfare etc (they pay one way if you are there for 6 months) Some schools love this because they don't have to pay severance at the end of the year. Other schools just need a teacher now. Everything is negotiable....just get it in writing. Why pay for a plane ticket here if you don't have to.

Short term contract = not going to be a good job

MollyBloom, ask your boyfriend who made the rule. Like Deubel said, there's not SMOE rule, and it's not in the contract.

If you came to SMOE, your bf and you could each take the 500,000 living allowance and get your own place, or ask SMOE to move you into a place together. You are coming at different times, but I know couples who do live together in apartments provided by SMOE.

Exactly! Get a job from home and have them pay for the plane ticket. If you end up paying your own way, it will take a couple months' worth of savings just to break even.

Yeah, I know. I have to get on that. Thanks, by the way for all your help in this matter. I really appreciate you taking the time!
