hi everyone, I'm about to fly out from Christrchurch, NZ for Seoul.
I don't have a E-2 visa... yet, my public school insists I can do a visa run to Japan once the visa issuance number comes through in a week.
Because I'll enter with a tourist visa without a return ticket I may be declined entry according to the Singapore Airlines lady.
Does anybody no if I'll be decline3 dor not? |

There are two issues here:
1. Have you held an E-2 before?... and; if so, is your Immigration 'record' flawless? If not, you cannot do a 'visa run' to a third country.
2. If the airline lets you on the plane with a one-way ticket (and without a work visa or proof of onward travel) you'll be OK... it's the airline who will be held responsible if you are denied entry. |

yeah, just to back up the above poster. you can only do a visa run if you've had one here before. i take it you've had all the crim checks etc done already. however even then there seems to be some confusion. speaking from recent experience, its best to try and call the relevant consulates and immigration offices just to make sure as there is still some confusion about the actual process.
for your boss to be confused about the process, for your new boss to be confused is no surprise!!!
also, the being declined bit is true. the airports are a bit tight now, mostly luck of the draw but if you do get the chance to do a a visa run, best to have your ticket for japan with you aswell just to prove you are leaving the country at some point.
good luck!!! |

Just returned from a visa run to Fukuoka Japan yesterday. If you have never held a S. Korean work visa, you can still get a visa (E2) without returning to your home as long as you have your academic credentials verified and CBC on file and of course, visa #. There is a fee of 25k won for the credential verification. If you go this route, verification of your credentials must be entered into the database. My coworker was denied an E2 visa because she was given the paperwork, but there was no entry in the database.
If you go, contact the embassy before leaving to make sure that you don't waste a trip. PM if you need further details. |

I may be wrong, but from reading the OP's post, I get the feeling Mr. Susan is at the airport! |

I entered Korea at Seoul/Incheon on a tourist visa on March 4th. I was not asked to show a return ticket. Just completed the visa run to Fukuoka as mentioned earlier. Other than not being able to get a phone or bank acct., I haven't had any serious problems. Not having a mobile is driving me crazy!!! |

Excellent! I'm at Singapore on a 6 hour transfer right now, I've had a E-2 visa before in Korea, so HOPEFULLY it shouldn't be a problem.
Your post put my mind at ease.... thanks. I can get to enjoying watching movies with Singapore Airlines that I saw 4 months ago in Korea (street DVDs of course) |

One more question for you; Did you have to lie about how long you were staying for/ purpose of the trip? |

I told the truth and nothing but the truth! I told immigration that I am visiting a potential employer. If I receive a job, I will leave the country to get a work visa and return. If not, I will return to the US. The woman stamped my passport, and that was that!
No problems other than the rough seas on the return ferry from Fukuoka. It turned into a real puke-fest! I thought Koreans would have stronger stomachs from eating all that spicy food. |

This sounds great and all, but it sounds more like the exception than the rule.
If someone can help by saying "They will, every time, let you through if you tell them that you're going on a Visa run to Japan" I would definitely appreciate it. |

Whhhat? Now I'm a little scared. I'm about to go to Korea on a tourist visa on Tuesday with no flight ticket to Japan yet. Is there a good chance I will be denied entry? I thought there would be no problem. Oh crap! |

Some common sense should be inputed here. Getting on a plane without a proper visa & coming to Korea *hoping* things will work themselves out is pretty fucking stupid tbh.
Why even bother asking if you're practically on the plane?

Definite maybe.
The people who will give you problems are the check-in clerks when you go to get on the plane (NOT immigration here).
IF you are refused entry AND you do not have an exit ticket the airline gets hooked for sending you back AND pays a fine as well.
Best of luck. |
