Hello all. I have been growing sick and tired of Korea and am seriously thinking about going back to England and teaching EFL there. But I don't know the going rate in the UK for teaching English to foreigners. Has anyone thought about teaching in the UK? What is the salary in the UK for a CELTA Certified teacher with examining experience? Has anyone taught in the UK? Would it be best if I taught in the UK for a language school or a university?
Sorry for the many questions, but I am thinking of going back in 2 years time by that time I would have had 4 years teaching experience. So if anyone can help me that would be greatly appreciated. |

There is a market, but it's not a very big one.
Most of my friends who want to remain close to home are teaching in Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Portugal - and some in Czech Republic, Poland etc.
Whatever you get in the UK won't equate to what you get in Korea because of the living indicies. |

Try the middle east. You'll be close to Europe, get months and months of vacation time/time off, and you won't have to deal with Korean culture and pollution. Just go look on the middle east job board. |

Have a look in the English forum. There's a few similar questions in there from others seeking work in the UK. |

How about Oz. I already have a WHV for there. Due to a timing error (It took far less time to process than I was told), it expires a month before my contract here finishes. I'm trying to decide whether or not to do a visa run (once acitvated it's valid for a year - multiple entry).

You would earn a quite respectable hourly rate (Somewhere around twenty pounds at a guess). The biggest problem you would have is that it seems to be difficult for teachers to get full-time work at language schools or colleges. They often end up working at two or three different places to survive, which is not ideal in most people's books.
I don't know about teaching in universities. You might well be better off in a uni, IF you can land a post, which might not be easy. |

i did a celta in the uk at a very good english school that hired a couple of teachers after the celta finished. generally work over there is paid about 11-12 pounds an hour not including prep time which will be more than Korea because they actually know if you are teaching properly or not! prep time is unpaid.
the main problem is the fact that its generally seasonal, but it is definitly possible to get a regular job, basically by going to a school, working for them and if they like you they will keep you. it really aint generally a very good living though mate, you will be strapped unlike over here.
on the plus side, you are actually teaching rather than edutaining. I found my celta lessons really rewarding and the european students always ask questions and are interested to learn (the adults that it) a lot of the time you can make money by going on trips on the weekends with the students and stuff. easy money there.
if you want to get in any position of seniority in a british council accredited school (ie a proper one) you will need to get yourself a delta (they are currently tightening all the qualification regs up cus people were using English schools to get people over on 'student visas' when it was actually for illegal immigration and no lessons were given.
hope this helps.

you can make 20 quid an hour but usually only in the summer only camps, the regular teaching positions dont make that, its about 11-12 quid an hour.
You've got little to 0 chance in a uni as im guessing you may not have a linguistics phd or ma. generally you need a phd, or be working on a phd to teach in a UK uni. |

So twenty pounds is around the going rate for certified teachers? That would be good news for me. Well my wife, who is Korean, and I are going back to the UK by the start of 2010. Hopefully, by that time the economy would have improved, the Government would have changed and there should be a change in the benefit culture. But above all, I want to live in the UK with my family soon.
I am hoping that I am able to become an IELTS Examiner by the time I arrive back in the UK and that I can examine as well as teach. Fingers crossed though.
My wife and I are willing to work hard in the UK, buy a house and bring some students over from Korea to the UK. Some very rich friends have suggested that they would send their kids over to the UK and they would pay us 2500 pounds per month in total.
Hopefully, I can make a better living in the UK than I used to. Before I got to Korea I was unemployed and had graduated from university. The job market was stale and I wanted to move to Korea and learn teaching and a new language. Now I miss friends and family and I want to go back. Luckily I am going to the UK this Xmas and I would be able to visit the schools and make some enquiries.
I tried to start a new forum on the UK Forums but I was restricted. I am unable to login in those forums or post a thread. I wonder why that is? |
