there is another thread discussing the ins and outs of scooters in seoul...

this probably would be better on the general motorcycle thread..

scooters usually are 50cc, 100cc or 125 cc...

it depends if you have gf on the back... local driving 50cc is ok... 50-70 kph

little bit further distances, across bridges and hills, occasionally gf on back.. 100 cc is better... 60- 90kph

often have a gf on the back... longer distances or if you like good power and acceleration 125cc.. 80-110 kph

mine is 125 cc and i love being able to accelerate out of any situation... also when I have gf on back I can still do good speeds.. 80-90 kph..

prices range from $300 for a 50 cc.... $500 for a 100cc... and $600 for 125cc

these are average minimum second hand prices....

usual websies... daves, english spectrum, worknplay..

Quote:
i got my 125 cc for $250 and my last 125cc $300. (1st one got stolen ㅠㅠ)

Yes.. you need a car licence for all scooters... and you must register anything over 50cc.... though many people dont... i havent registered my 125cc...

as long as you wear your helmut.. the police will usually leave you alone..

but if you have a crash... even if its NOT your fault.. you are liable if no licence or no registration.....

That's right, as far as I've been told many times, you only have to register your scooter or motorcycle (buy insurance) if it is over 50cc.

Quote:
To put it as simply as possible:

0~49cc:
- driver's license
- no insurance
- no plate

50 - 124cc
- driver's license
- insurance
- plate

> 125cc
- motorcycle endorsement on your license
- insurance
- plate

The scoots advertised as 50cc fall under the 49cc and under category because their actual engine displacement is actually just under 50cc - similarly for the 125cc bracket.

I just upgraded from 50cc to 125, so I have to go and buy insurance. I was told it'll probably be about 170,000 for a year.

Of course, having posted this, I do agree this should probably not be on the Buy and Sell thread. Looking forward to some rides in the next few months though!

Said this in other places, but i'll say it again: if you cant afford to license, register and insure in Korea then you damn sure cant afford the fines and costs involved in an accident, whoever caused it. ins on my 125 is 140k (samsung anycar), registration and license were cheap and not too much hassle if you do your homework. made a big difference knowing i was covered when i got hit and got fingered for the blame. samsung picked up the tab with no deductible, no questions. might be another 20-30k on the premium this year but no big deal, they said it was going to be 500k just if i didnt have a license, plus their repairs.

What? They never held onto my USA license. I got mine 5 years ago, though. Has something changed? First time I've heard of this.

I had to take a written test and turn in my US license. When I went home
for a visit I showed a printout of my itinerary, they made a copy and gave
it back. This was in Gangnung on the East coast. The study guide is
10,000 won. You should bring your own pictures just in case the booth
isn't working. You should bring a computer pen to fill in the bubbles for
the test. I did all the paperwork and the exam on one day and then
rode my scooter illegally to the test on another day.

btw - be carefull on the scooters - especially 50cc. They don't really have enough power to get out of anyone's way. I don't think I could ride one here... 125s are much better.

that's the biggest crock I've heard in a long time!!

I cannot believe K is actually taking foreigner's driver's licenses away from them!!!

how can it possibly be illegal for you to hold a license in your own country just because you are here and apply for one here also???

do they take your teaching certificate away if you applied for one of those here??

Korea insanity!!

btw, I have a K driver's license but no one took away my American one - must have been before this craziness came about thank goodness!

Easy on the "Korea insanity" paranoia. It's not discrimination by the Korean government:
