Hi everyone. Many thanks to those who've provided a song as requested, but I appreciate the passion of the folks who've provided several. Passion's what it's all about, eh.
At this stage, I think my song Creepy Green Light is still the best, but the most memorable of the others (sticking to just the ones I've never heard before until you introduced them to me in this thread) are (in the order they appeared in the thread):
H.I.M (Kiss Of Dawn) - this has a strong Alt-rock feel but Metal too
Avenged Sevenfold (Almost Easy)
Opeth (Blackwater Park) - freakin fabulous!
Into Eternity-spiralling into depression
"The Shrine" by King Diamond (I hated the Sevendust song unfortunately)
I've not listened to everything yet though. Keep 'em coming!

I've heard it said(by me) that europeans don't understand metal and americans don't understand dance music. By understand I mean, being able to distinguish genres etc.
Now obviously alot of dance genres originated in the states and maybe some metal ones in europe(i have no idea on this count) but just in the americans I have met, they seem to know about metal whilst not knowing a thing about dance music except to label it all techno. I am the opposite. I have no idea what even constitutes a metal song. Also North Americans seem to be into more heavy music in general.
Am I on to something or did I just meet the wrong people?
I'm not trying to hijack thread...just wondering and u guys seem to know your metal. |
Respectfully, I consider the above to be totally and fundamentally false. Europe - especially Germany and Scandinavia - has a huge Metal scene and the US - especially northern cities - has a massive House and Techno scene. What happened with Metal is the Brits had all the Patriarchs, as it were - Led Zepp, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden - but the Americans started to dominate with Van Halen and Aerosmith-inspired 80s Hair Metal, Metallica and Slayer-style Speed (or Thrash) Metal and latterly Grunge (which is essentially sloppy Metal) and latterly still Tool.

Impressed! A dozen or so posts and no rankist musical bigotry. No semantical discussions about what is so and so metal and very definitely isn't that other kind of metal.
No condescending descriptions of what is Cunt Hole Metal, Dried Shit Metal, *beep* Metal, Pretentiofuckface Metal etc. etc.
Well done! |
That made me LOL!

It's not really obscure, but I really love WALK by Pantera.
Slightly off topic, but if you are ever in Shinchon, there's a little metal bar called "Judas or Sabbath". The owner is a cool guy and he takes all requests. He's got a projector and he'll play anything you can find on Youtube. |
Got directions, buddy? Sounds right up me and my buddy's ally!

I've always thought of Hardcore/Grindcore of being a little bit punk, a little bit metal. I can't tell the difference between some "grindcore" and some "speed metal" bands. Besides, Faith No More was a "metal" band, but they weren't always that metal, Mr. Bungle seemed WAY more metal.
As far as straight metal, have you listened to FANTOMAS? My friends and I listened to that excessively in college, but the kids I've met recently have never heard of it. The cover of 'Rosemary's Baby' is freaking transcendent.
Also, if you've never listened to Blood Brothers do so. |
i think that you're moving a bit too far beyond "metal". trying to call mr. bungle "metal" is like trying to call DEVO rock and roll.
one thing about metal is that it is aesthetically restrictive. extremely conservative. perhaps the most conservative rock and roll genre in history, as far as sound, attire, presentation... and so many others.
FANTOMAS, while very intriguing, and featuring DUDES FROM METAL BANDS, are not a metal band.
mr. bungle, while very intriguing, and featuring THAT DUDE FROM THAT BAND THAT HAD THAT GUITARIST WHO LOOKED LIKE A METAL DUDE BUT THEN LEFT WHEN HE FOUND OUT THE KEYBOARD PLAYER WAS A RAGING HOMOSEXUAL, are not a metal band.
i would argue that those two bands have more in common with capt. beefheart than any metal band.
with that said, my favorite metal band is chicago's TROUBLE.
i am also fond of PENTAGRAM, who have never had a decent recording, and that is part of their charm.
and to clarify, since it's annoying me - by "blood brothers" do you mean that band from seattle that sounds like 14 year old girls fighting in a mall, or the song by iron maiden?
one is metal, the other one is a reason to neuter anyone who says "dude, that's metal". please inform. |
I know Faith No More are very diverse and 'The Real Thing' is not heavy enough to be Metal, but Angel Dust in particular qualifies as Metal basically if you ask me. On their final album, the songs Stripsearch, Ashes to ashes, Last cup of sorrow show a strong Metal influence. I saw Faith No More in 1992 on Guns N'Roses' Use your illusion tour (they played only Angel Dust songs as it was their then new album) and their set warranted no other description than Metal. |

| I hate Danzig generally, but that song (above) is great too. Kenny from Type O Negative (peace be upon him) plays guitar for Danzig these days which is a massive plus, but generally Glenn's songs irritate me. |

No mention of Mastodon yet in a metal thread? Blood Mountain and Leviathan are both pretty amazing albums. Check out "Colony of Birchmen" from the former and "Iron Tusk" from the latter. I'd consider Blood Mountain one of the best metal albums ever.
Lightning Bolt is another one of my favorites, but mostly for the sheer audacity of their music. Check out 13 monsters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQ2ni-bYL_o
Nothing will ever top Black Sabbath's first few albums though. |

Totally by accident, I discovered a Dutch Symphonic Metal band called Epica and in particular their 2007 album The Divine Conspiracy. Haven't heard it all yet but what I've heard sounds pretty minc-blowing. Recommended. And It's the only Metal I've ever liked with a female vocalist. Evanescence? Forget it.

My dear friends, I trust you are well. Hello again on another Sunday afternoon. On sundays, if I've no plans (I try to avoid them), I enjoy nothing more than to drink high quality bastions of sophistication and the good life at home sensibly whilst downloading music. I'm a fan of all kinds of music as people of taste, discernment and decency ought, but on the menu recently is decidedly Metal/Grunge. I'm a very big fan of Tool, Type O Negative, Faith No More and Soundgarden - so very much a follower of the Sabbath-style sound as opposed to the Metallica/Slayer Speed Metal sound. I do occasionally enjoy the latter, but it gets blown away generally.
Anyway, guys and girls, I don't wanna have a chat about Metal per se. What I wanna do is this:
1. Which ONE (relatively obscure) Metal or Grunge song just....blew you the hell away?
2. State it.
3. If at all possible, try to make it relatively obscure. There's not much point in telling me Smells like teen spirit because I wanna get inspired by something new.
I'll state mine after someone else gets the ball rolling. |
Christ, Mr Hale! Your taste in (HM) music is so close to mine, that I suspect you to be one of my socks. |

In the spirit of the current NHL playoffs and my good humour at the 3-1 lead my Habs have over the Bruins, I'll let you off with a 2-minute roughing penalty. Feel the shame. |
