Anyone have any experience mailing boxes of clothes and other items to the US?
What is the cheapest way to mail clothes and books back to the US?
Would it be cheaper to mail boxes, or pay the fee for extra luggage on the flight?
Any other tips?
Thanks! |

Piece of advice. If you mail your clothes home, the cheapest way, will take about 3 months... I did so, and when they got home, they smelled kind of like paper or cardboard/sawdust. Anyhow, that smell never goes away... no matter how many times you wash them. So, my advice, wrap them up with tons of plastic and make sure they're SEALED in.. airtight! Then wrap them up again and again!!
I don't remember how much it cost, but I'll guess... it was about 20,000 won per box? If my memory serves me right... but yeah, you're looking at 3 months and some stinky clothes... seriously, get huge plastic bags that are airtight. Maybe that'll help the smell. Anyone who tried that can attest to that. |

It's cheap to send it by surface and it takes about two months. And yes, your clothes will stink for a long time after you get them out of the box. They spray the containers with some kind of pesticide. |

Some places have discontinued surface mailing to the US, but just last week I sent several boxes by ship to America. It cost about 30,000 for a 10kg box. |

It is cheap to send boxes home. But before you do, Kiwi, remember that you can fit alot of books into a box that is allowed by airline regulations to have 23kg; and that's in addition to another piece of luggage that is also allowed to be 23 kg. Unless you have ALOT of stuff, 46 kg should take care of everything and you don't pay a dime. |

I have to second that, shipping it cargo freight might be the cheapest (I shipped 6 boxes home for about $200- they counted the weight of the boxes as much as the amount of boxes I had shipped) but it got there 4 months later smelling of mildew and all damaged...
But at the same time, some airlines are restricting the amount of luggage a person can bring on a plane.
I would look at a way to express mail your clothing and books back home, it might take a few weeks to get there, but you get the piece of mind in knowing that almost intact......more so than shipping it on a ship for several months..... |

I've boat shipped clothes and never had any problems. The clothes did have a strange smell to them when I got them, but 1 wash with Tide, and a bounty dryer sheet and everything was back to normal. |

I was recently told at my local Korean Postal Service office that they had stopped surface mail - is this just some branches, or all? It seems that other people on here have recently sent stuff surface mail. Are there are other/better options aside from the Korean Postal Service? |
