The Corporate Accountability International website is having their annual "Vote for the Worst" poll. You can find it by clicking here

The purpose of the vote is to bring awareness of the top 8corporations most involved with crime, labor abuse, human rights violations, environmental damage, and so on and so forth. US-based companies are generally present on this list, but there are multinationals and non-US firms listed as well.

This year's poll has a write-in option, in case you choose to add in some other firm that you feel is even more notorious than the 8 listed.

Here are the 8
1. Blackwater
2. Archer Danials Midland
3. Countrywide
4. Mattel
5. Nestle
6. Toyota (a shocker!)
7. Wal-Mart
8. Wendy's

I'm surprised Halliburton and Exxon didn't make the list. Exxon won last year with Halliburton in at #2 by 400 votes. So I wrote it in.

I think that by far the worst corporation in the world is Monsanto.

Rolling Eyes

These corporations have done a few things that you don't approve of. What are the alternatives? What would you recommend happen? I suppose you could call your friend Michael Moore to investigate but it appears there are a few conflicts of interest.

I really hope you've got no plans to retire comfortably or save up for that nice car or fancy holiday you've always wanted as ownership in these corporations would help you realize such goals of financial independence.

Not just him, but many many people don't approve of the things these companies do, and it's not just a few things either. The alternative? Better corporate law so that these companies were not able to do the thing they do at the moment.

By better corporate law, do you mean expand the regulatory powers of the government? The same government that went to war with Iraq by the way Exclamation You should consider the alternatives to more corporate interference to prevent what you call crimes, whether real or perceived. It would mean less capital investment, lower paying jobs and job benefits, less jobs in the economy, less opportunity for investment by people like you and me, higher costs for goods and services and more economic inefficiencies. It sounds counter-intuitive to a lot of people, but the best thing is less government interference and lower taxes. This will take care of a lot of economic inefficiencies. Basically it comes down to a larger government with a monopoly on power that can't be trusted anyway, or people, companies and corporations competing with each other in a free market.

I'd say Blackwater for literally getting away with murder.

Ownership in "those" companies is a means to financial independence?
There are plenty of other companies out there that aren't wantonly wasting a regional environment, or committing murder, or lobbying against fuel efficiency increases.

If the South African government, circa Apartheid Era, were listed on the NYSE, with your logic, you would advocate buying their stock, wouldn't you?

At any rate, the current lack of regulation or US government oversight is what got us Countrywide's meltdown, the mortgage and credit card crises, Enron/Worldcom, AND KBR actively avoiding paying taxes- and poisoning and/or killing US soldiers abroad.

But, you do have a good idea, in that there should be "less government interference". You are correct: No more Corporate Welfare, no more 30 billion dollar bailouts for Bear Stearns, no more industry lobbyists on Capitol Hill, no more no-bid contracts, no fast-track trade deals, no more Cayman Islands loopholes, and no more than 35% control of any media market. You're onto something big here- now to just get John McInsane, the Stray Cock Express, to be a 'maverick' and sign onto that. Too bad he is too 'embedded' with lobbyists for that kind of 'straight talk'.
