I work for a GEPIK public school and I've just had 120 000 taken out of this months pay packet for "unemployment insurance" (for the whole year, I think). I've been in Korea for a while but this is new to me. Is this normal? Does it mean I can get something if they were to actually fire me!? |

First, find out again what the deduction is. A lot of times, things get lost in translation. Find out the actual Korean word for it and then try and look it up yourself or post it on Dave's. |

There's no way you should be paying unemployment insurance premiums - you can never collect. |

I was asked if I wanted it.
I said no. |

IF you are on an E2 visa then you are exempt from the "unemployment insurance". Your sojourn in Korea is tied to your employment. No job = no visa = no ability to collect.
If you are on an F-visa then you are legally obligated to pay because you CAN collect when you are terminated. |

The money is likely going into someone's pocket. There shouldn't be a one-time payment for such a thing. And it's not something someone who entered on an E2 visa should pay in the first place.
I always assume the worst. Someone's pocketing your money. It's amazing the *beep* we have to go through here. |

IIRC, your employer cannot legally enroll you in unemployment insurance unless you voluntarily sign up for it. |

I have been paying it these past couple of years myself - - 10, 000 a month.

My school asked if I wanted to enroll. It is an "unemployment insurance." If you are too sick/medically unable to work, this insurance will pay for up to two month of missed work.
I asked the school if I was able to enroll since I'm only on an E-2 for the time being. Originally, they said that I could benefit from the program. I figure they must have seen my confusion on the matter and looked further into the details of the insurance because when pay day came around they had realized I wouldn't benefit from the program and didn't deduct for it. |

Are you on an E-series visa? If so, how do you intend to benefit from the plan? |

I don't. But I found out who my boss was for a hundred bucks. Then , when I earn money on the side, I have no remorse.
I got my money back a hundred fold. |

Friend, you might want to reword that. It doesn't appear to make a lot of sense the way you have it right now. |
