You have many posters here such as: On the other hand, Joo, Steve, Gopher, IGTG, Bigbird, Bobster, Bramble, Englishteacher1, theotherSarah, Kuros, Adventurer etc....

Who wants to volunteer for the debates. I would say we need 4 people to say they want to take part in a debate.

I'd like to, but I've got midterm exams and assignments. I'm very behind already because my kids have been too sick to go into child care for a few weeks, and so I've been caring for them instead of keeping up with my studies.

I'd love to do this, but it will have to be another time for me, I'm afraid.

I'm not quite getting the point of all this top-down promotion of debates. Bascically, debating is what happens on a lot of threads here, in a loosely-structured, informal manner. Why is it now thought that we need to have anything more formalized than that?

I appreciate the role of the mods. I've seen a few unmoderated forums, and they are complete and utter intellectual toilets. However, these recent interventions from above have a faint whiff of social engineering about them.

Obviously, that's just my opinion.

That's why I'm wondering if a style is intended?

If it's policy debate there can be no conjecture in the first two rounds. A resolution is proposed and EVIDENCE is provided to support or negate that resolution. I can see the point of that. It would also be limited to a set number of rebuttals. Though without the time limitation it would have to be perhaps a word or evidence limitation.

A lincoln-douglas style debate, more of a free for all, is what we've got already. L-D debate doesn't even have to be logically accurate.

Are you just trying to have a more directed discussion of a specific topic, Enrico? The other thread didn't seem to resolve anything.

Is the another attempt by the "New Breed" to mold and re-invent these
forums in their image of some kind of kinder gentler Dave's ESL Cafe.

Group thought and control.

I didn't ask if certain posters prefer to whine, I suppose they can do that and have whine with their cheese, so to speak or do something better and give a positive suggestion. I know that's a novel idea or harder than complaining. You know, if you don't want to, no one is twisting your arm. Oh, where was that mind control device I planted on you. It doesn't seem to be working. I must ask Stewie about that. Maybe, his mother took the device away again. Surprised

Hey, if you want a forum that resembles a bar fight, that's your preference. Very Happy Make sure you don't take off the implant I put in you, so the mind control works. As far as this debate, it is all up to you, and the members in the end. Some said they're interested, some said they aren't.

My proposal is this:
Let's say we choose the idea of global warming.

Gopher debates Joo

Joo believes that global warming is too hyped, and Gopher is an ardent defender of most of the scientists raising the alarm bells. I am not saying this what they think. It's an example!

Gopher can post three times and Joo can post three times.

They have present a paragraph each. They would also have 3-5 points in outline form or something like that for each post. They could also agree beforehand if they want on how many points they both want to go with. The debaters have some leeway. Think of this as like a courtroom thing with people presenting counterarguments in point form.

I would tend to agree. The official debate sounds like a nice idea. But it holds no appeal to me at all. I post here between this and that in my schedule, when I cannot sleep, etc. I could never come here during a set time or on a set schedule, responding in a limited time, in a preplanned debate. Feels like an "activity..."

I'm a newcomer to the boards in general and mostly lurk the CE forums, but I'd be down to argue a point I disagree with Smile Either way, really, but I always found the ones I don't agree with to be the most fun. It's been a long time since debate class...

Well, I could debate you. As General Zod would say "Is there no one here to challenge me?!" I wouldn't mind debating Bobster as long as the prize isn't Cass. Anyway, I'm in. I remember debate team. I also remember Quiz Bowl. Anyone who besides Khenan wants to debate?
I think we need two more people to get two teams going?

I don't mind debating topics like global warming, The Iraq War,
the case for alternative fuels, or whatever is out there... It might not be practical to have a debate. I am not sure.

As long as someone else is in charge of the logistics, I'm in... although I wouldn't mind a topic that hasn't been wrung to death here already.

So are you going to join in? We would have three people and looking for a fourth. I don't care about the topic. Your topic is a tough one, though. It definitely can be done and is challenging. We have two people ready for a debate, but we need two others or only one other, I think, if you join in Czar.

I have no idea who would handle the logistics, as Khenan asked, let's first get the four people, and then get someone to volunteer for that.
