So I have to go and get my health check, and then my ARC by myself. I havent' done this before, and not even sure how to.

I'll have to do it in Daejeon, any advice?

Health Exam
Go to a government hospital (국공립병원, gukgongnimbyeongwon), public health center (보건소, bogeonso), or general hospital (종합 병원, jonghap byeongwon). Request a recruitment health exam (채용신체검사서, chaeyongsinchegeomsaseo). This entails a relatively standard panel of exams and tests. In addition to that basic standard, Immigration requires HIV, TBPE (illicit drug) and cannabinoid (marijuana, etc.) tests. You must specify these to the hospital. Consider printing out the Korean text of the regulation and taking it with you:
Quote:
채용신체검사서 검사항목에 마약복용 여부 확인을 위한 TBPE검사, 카나비노이드(마리화나)검사 및 에이즈 감염 여부 확인을 위한 HIV 검사는 필수 항목임

The cost of all this varies, but 50,000 is a reasonable estimate (lowest I've seen is 30,000, several in the 50-60,000 range, and some ridiculously higher). If they quote you much higher, go someplace else.

ARC
Once you've received the results of your health exam, go to the Immigration Office. You'll need:
  • your passport
  • 2 passport photos (3x4 cm)
  • your health exam report
  • a copy of the school's business registration certificate (사업자등록증, saeopjadeungnokjeung)
  • 10,000 won
Fill out an application form for foreigner registration when you get there, or save time and fill it out beforehand: http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/IMM/imm_forms/image/resi_1.pdf. Take a numbermake sure it's from the right machine, since different windows handle different types of applications. When they call your number, go to the window, hand the officer your documents, smile, and try not to look sketchy. Wink If everything's in order, they'll hold onto your passport and give you a receipt telling you when you can pick up your passport and ARC.

If your employer doesn't appreciate you enough to even take you to the immigration office in order to take care of this, they don't appreciate you enough in my opinion. Daejeon is hurting for teachers- - even more than other places in Korea, which are hurting for teachers, so this is especially sad.

I honestly think it's good that your boss wants you to take care of it yourself. Even if he didn't, you should be willing to do it yourself. It's you who would be in trouble if you didn't do it; it's you who would have to deal with those problems; it's YOU that needs to be registered. YOU should do it. He should at least help out if you don't know how to get there, but you should do the rest.

As for the health exam, that's even better. If the boss was there, the doc and nurses would probably just tell him everything and there's no way you'd be able to have any privacy. They'd probably invite him into the room while they're checking you!

Follow the above directions and you'll be fine.

The school should be taking care of that with you. My school has a guy who pretty much does everything but sign your name for you. He even goes and picks up your passport when it is all said and done and gives it to us that day. They want us teaching not d1cking around with immigration regardless of how easy it might be. I guess if they don't want to take you there isn't much you can do. Make sure they take care of any fees though.

Funny how Google translates "카나비노이드(마리화나)" into "a non-Canadian noyideu (marijuana)"

They generally don't pay for the physical.

My school, when I went to Japan on a visa run, reimbursed me my traveling expenses but I had to pay the visa fee myself.

Some things they'll pay for, some things they won't.

You have 90 days after arriving in Korea on your E-2 visa to get it.

Except that, by some accounts, it's illegal to work at all without the ARC.

And, you can't enroll for Health Coverage until you have it.
