I've just been hit for unemployment insurance. 43,200 for 2007 and 41,040 for this year. I wasn't asked, it was just taken from salary. I'd seen someone posting about it just this week and used what I learnt from that post, that I'm on an E2 and if I lose my job I lose my visa.
I was told that if I have an accident then the insurance will pay money to me, I responded that if I was injured and unable to work, I would again lose my visa after 15 or 30 (couldn't remember the details) days and have to leave the country.
Was told they would look into it. Anyone got any advice or links to information for this situation? |

Unemployment insurance. Yes. Does that come with the vaseline?
Many of us should just hand over money to our employers first before we strart the job.

Sorted, phoned 1350-asked the question and was called back within 10 mins with what I wanted to hear, unemployment insurance is voluntary.
Apparently now I have to apologise for standing up for myself. Currently having a beer to celebrate my probably shortlived victory over avarice, red tape and narrow-mindedness. |

The unemployment insurance is strictly voluntary. You DO NOT have to contribute to it if you don't want to. But it does pay out if you cannot work (regardless of your nationality). |

But you cannot collect if you are on an E2 visa since no work = no status of sojourn (you have to leave the country).

It would make for an interesting lawsuit. |

My school swears blind I must pay since I'm on F2. Are all the rest of you on an E? |

I am an F2 and carry my own unemployment insurance as a part of my private health/life policy. I wonder if that means I am exempt from such things. Never heard of it before now anyway. |

I'm on an E2.
There was a bit of a heated exchange on Friday and I don't want to exacerbate the situation but things seem to have been resolved to my satisfaction, no further word on the subject in school today so I'm going to leave it at that until next payday.
If I check and it's been taken out I will cause a stink. Maybe I'll fall down the stairs and 'hurt myself'. |

It's ridiculous though. You'd think they'd get their heads out of their arses and realise it's impossible for you to collect unemployment insurance. Bunch of weirdos. |
