I'm not sure why it's all that traumatic to the kid though. He could still breathe couldn't he?

If the teacher would've jsut left the tape sitting on the kid's desk, I'm sure the kid would've found a wayt to tape his own mouth shut.

I remember when i was in first and second grade the teacher would put a piece of masking tape on the mouths of kids who wouldnt shut up. No parents cared back then. It was effective. I dont see what the big deal is.

There's no excuse for doing that.

As I mentioned on that post and on my blog, that happened at my old school, where I taught kindergarten once a week last year. Yes, kindergarten kids can be a handful, but teachers should know better. Considering some of the punishments I've seen handed down to students of all ages, I'm surprised this one caused a fuss among parents. But remember, these are very small children---6 is young of course, but that works out to about 4 in Korean age---and it should go without saying that you shouldn't do that to a kid. Whether or not it's truly damaging is irrelevant. If a kid has his mouth forcibly shut, s/he's gonna try to scream and cry, making all the harder to breathe.

As I pointed out, the school's website no longer allows guests to view teachers' pictures, and now gives a "login" prompt. The prompt was not there a few days ago. Based on the video, though, the teacher is not someone I reckognize, and is most likely an "assistant" teacher. I haven't heard any news outside of that Korea Beat article, but I really hope she's not kept on staff after that. However, we've seen the very lax punishments handed down to Korean teachers who beat, abuse, molest, or harass students, so I won't be surprised if she issues an apology and is kept around.

I had my mouth taped shut in ballet class once, along with two of my friends. We were talking to much, she threatened with the tape, we laughed, so she did it.

We shut up (apart from a couple of muffled giggles), and our parents basically said "serves you right". It was hard to do ballet and get winded without being able to breathe through your mouth, but I deserved it, and thought it was funny after the fact.

That was about 10 years ago. Should she do this today, she'd probably have some livid parents after her.

I had it done to me in grade 2. I was in French immersion and I think it was done because I was speaking English. Also had my desk beside the teacher's desk that year. Guess I was badly behaved.

Just scotch tape though. And one piece. Just enough for the embarrassment effect. Things like that though can have negative effects on the child. I wouldn't recommend it. Christ, look how I turned out. Pretty scary stuff.

I had my mouth taped shut. I didn't quite like that. It wasn't really effective on me.

Reminds me of this story that was going around when I was a middle school student:

Apparently, there was a woman who had been cheating on her doctor husband. He was so angry about it that he bribed another doctor to sew her vagina shut during a cosmetic surgery operation.

It sounded pretty horrible, but the only problem was that half of us had no clue what a vagina was. The story sounded good enough to pass on, however.
