A few weeks ago, SK sent a message to my phone in Korean and English stating that I needed to go to an SK store and show all of my documents/alien card etc or they were going to terminate my service.

That's right, terminate the service on my prepaid phone.

I've now been to two SK stores, both of whom didn't know what to do when I showed them the message. I brought a Korean with me to translate. So basically, I assume that is their way of eliminating 98% of their foreign resident clients in one sweep. Off to buy a new phone this weekend, with a new provider.

I would not recommend SK if you are thinking of buying a new phone.

I'm a little confussed over the whole matter with SK.
Is it the cell phone that you bought or is it the number that is being canceled?
I bought a used cell phone from a friend. Then went to SK store to
sign up for prepaid phone service.
I got the same message as you and went to a SK store to check if my phone number was good or not. They told me that everything was fine and sent me on my way. I even called (011-200-9000) to check and see if everything was still good.

I called that number but when I finally found the SK store in question they couldn't help me. I finally found the right place and they did their thing to keep the phone in service.

I will see on 4/1 if they actually confirmed my ID.

I think it was just inefficiency but I could be wrong. You would think any authorized SK place should be able to call a number and verify that ID.

Sk is the new immigration agent. They told me my phone is good until my ARC expires. The day I renew it I have to hurry down to their office. IF I dont, it will be disconnected. Rolling Eyes

What exactly do we need to re-re-register? I was just planning on bringing my ARC.
Also, can anyone type the Korean message that was sent? I accidentally deleted mine!

SK are asking folks to re-register themselves before the end of the month....so if you were the original person to register the phone you are fine. Just need to confirm your ID. IF you acquired the phone from someone else then they (or whoever first registered it), need to go and confirm the transfer.

I couldn't do the latter so stayed with SK, stayed with pay as u go. Just did all the paperwork at the big branch in Gangnam where I always go.

(This is a pain in the bum but it was the same hassle to get a phone in Japan so..... how I miss the convenience of 'off the shelf' mobiles in Tesco.)

I also can't do the latter because I bought this phone at Yongsan and who knows how many hands it's been through. What paperwork was involved? And where in Gangnam? I need to go and take care of this...

Talk about Big Brother. Jeez!

What harm can a foreigner do with a phone that a Korean cannot do, exactly?

Gonna take care of this on Saturday, still have the Korean message so hopefully no probs.

I get back to Korea next week and my friend is giving me their phone since there on their way out. Thing is, Ill be on a tourist visa for 90 days. Even though its not in my name and I wont have an ARC do you think they'll let me put money on it? or make me re-register?
