Thank you for writing to KEB.

We regret that, following a Korean Foreign Exchange Transaction Regulation stipulates foreigners, who have a bankcard issued in Korea, are not allowed to withdrawal money through ATM in abroad.

In case that customer need to visit other countries, please visit the nearest KEB and exchange your money by cash.

We regret that It will be not good solution for customers but we struggle to solve customers inconvenience to government and trying to discuss about changing regulation.

We apologized that you have inconvenience with KEB.

Best Regards,

Park, Kyung Min

KEB customer service center.

It doesnt matter if you are married or not.. I have gotten the same response on the phone in both korean and English. and not just from this bank as well.. But they will give me a credit card? Rolling Eyes

I just opened a savings account with Standard Chartered in Itaewon today. They issued me an international ATM card on the spot. The bank teller assures me it will work overseas.

Standard Chartered Jeil Bank will issue you one... I've got one in January.

I banked with KEB for over 5 years and then they wanted to stamp my bloody passport to exchange 1m cash?! I think not. I closed my account and opened one up with SC Jeil. No sweat, super easy - and the kicker is I didn't even have all the documents on me and they still issued me a card!!!

You better take cash (or another alternative) the next time you travel and make sure your card works overseas before you depend on it.

There have been many instances of foreigners who were issued cards that were supposed to work overseas and then discovered, much to their dismay, that the card did NOT work outside of Korea.

If I'm not mistaken, the samsung card will let you take out money overseas but as a cash advance...so you will have to pay interest on any amount you draw. I don't know who would want to do that. Last time I checked my KB inter ATM card worked fine overseas with a decent exchange rate as well. Very Happy

Sorry to hijack the thread, but while we're still bitching about banking...

In this day and age of computers and this Internet thingamawhatsit... why the hell does it take one month for my cheque to clear?

Send an email "Is there money in the account to cover the cheque?"
Answering email, "Yes, there is. Here's the money."
Next, deposit the money into my account.

I have to wait 4 weeks? Bullshit!

I used my SC card in Beijing last weekend. It's worked in every country I've visited so far. I agree with ttompatz, though: don't rely on just one source of funds if that one source is a card issued by a Korean bank. The SC card will probably work. I imagine we'd have heard by now if people were having problems with them. This being Korea, however, having a Plan B is never a bad idea.

yeah i have a samsung card and they will do it but they limit you to about $1000 and you do have to pay interest from the day you take it out until you pay.

with that said getting a samsung card is easy if you are at a ps or univ. in fact they will come looking for you. we were approached at our univ 4 years ago. they came to our office helped fill out the forms etc.

there was an article about this in one of the papers awhile back. According to the article there are no government restrictions concerning giving foreigners international atm cards.

Read this, plus the included English link and print the Korean link. Bring the Korean link to the KEB bank, along with an International ATM card from another bank and two of your middle fingers.
