Hypothetically, if someone wanted to abandon his or her job in Korea and move to a job in another country, without telling her employer, would it be a) feasible and b) wise to acquire the visa in Korea and jet off, or would there be questions about the E2 visa already on the passport?
(My girlfriend hates her job.) |

Yes, she can run. Just tell her to omit the school on her resume.

She doesn't like her job. And if she gives notice, the employer will financially rape her. Good reasons. |

Yeah, financial rape is the reason.
Question is, is it possible to get her visa HERE, without questions being asked? When leaving the country, will Immigration get screwy? |

I am in Seoul right now working at a hogwon that is driving me crazy! I wasn't told they were a BRAND new hogwon and I was going to be the test rat! Seriously, these people are so unorganized!!! Aside from this, I can't stand the air quality living in Seoul. I have been sick since I got here. I would like to stay in Korea, just not this dirty, smoggy city.
So, I want to run. But...I don't know how to do it. I know I pack my stuff and find a way (suggestions would be good) to move my belongings to another place (suggestions would be great) but I am concerned about my E2 visa status. Won't I have problem with getting another job if I received my work visa through this hogwon's employment contract? Please, please, help me. I need to find a job soon...I am getting paid at the end of this month, so it would be ideal to leave ASAP, but I know that is way too soon to find a job. Maybe leaving at the end of April would be better? I don't know, someone help me out. I don't want to stay here.

I share your sentiments about Seoul's air and being the first NET at a brand new hagwon is not all that great either. I think you're at a fork in the road. If you do break your contract and try to run to another job in Korea, you could pay the (Immigration) piper later, but I think that other posters may have more complete information about this.
Some friends of mine, a married couple, did a runner years ago and it worked out for them, but they returned to the US. I also knew a guy who did a runner from a hagwon in a rural province and got another job in Seoul shortly afterwards. That rural hagwon, apparently, never reported him to Immigration, which is the key issue I think.
I suggest that you to check out EFL Law's website and get some solid advice. |

I think you've just described everyone's first job in Korea. I've never had a hagwan job that I didn't want to run from. They all pretty much SUCK!!!! It took me months to get to where I was half-way comfortable with the situation. I am not trying to tell you what to do, you will have to decide for yourself. But I am saying ...don't expect the next job to be much better. (if any at all) You'll have to learn to make the best of a bad situation (no matter where you end up). Sure you may luck out and find a wonderful place, but the chances of that are about the same as a fart in a windstorm....or something like that.
If you decide to stay, you will have to toughen yourself up, take charge of the things you can change and recognize the things you can't. All in all you will be a better person for it. (this is of course assuming that you are getting paid regularly and not being abused by your employer, if that is the case....by all means run)

Wonderful. Brace yourself sweety, this isn't going to be nice, but hopefully it wakes you the hell up!
You moved half way around the world for job you knew nothing about. You didn't do any research on it and you didn't even begin to find out about the labor laws that keep you there. You assumed a city of 13million people would be a perpetually blossoming rose garden.
And now, do they pay you on time and in full? Do they force you to do overtime? Do they pay pension and health insurance? Is you apartment a dump?
You didn't mention the big things, so i assume they are fine. Those are the real reasons people run.
Now that you have a visa, you cannot get another job unless your employer releases you from said visa. That means for a full year. If you run, run home, or run to China where it is even more polluted. |

| If you want to work in another country you have nothing about which to worry. If you want another job in Korea there are many potential headaches. |

if she's applying for a visa from another country while here she will be applying thru that country's embassy - not Korea's. There's no reason anyone there would want to contact anyone here - she's here legally is all they would care about or want to know. Chances are they don't even know or understand about the various visas in one's passport from here or anywhere else.
whether or not she CAN get a visa for the other country while here depends entirely on that country's regulations and what they are asking for. best to check out the school that wants to hire her or post on Dave's other board, the one for international positions.
when she exits thru immigration chances are they won't even ask her anything - if they do , it might be is your job finished? to which she can ask, yes. it's really not a big deal at all.
good luck and post again if you have more questions. this thread seems to be getting hijacked -  just start another thread or something if necessary. |

| Even if you do a runner, you can come back to Korea after the current visa expires- one year or less. if you don't have a visa, and are teaching illegally, you can run and come back at any time. |

liquidwmn - one of the first q's you SHOULD have asked was "how long has your hakwon been in business?"
however, since you obviously didn't do your homework (!) you are now reaping the effects of that egregious error.
add that to the fact Ks in general are quite unorganized for any number of reasons and well, you pretty much know the rest now, right?
since they ARE new and you are their first FT you might want to try and make that your advantage instead of disadvantage - it IS possible, at least in order to stick it out for the year.
1. ask for a sit down meeting to discuss various issues you have with the schedule, or teaching, whatever it is. have a pen and paper ready with a list of things to discuss.
2. have another list of your suggestions as to how you think things might be better, what can be done - different books? placing the kids in levels according to their E?
3. have a separate list for issues non-related to teaching; same thing, have another list with suggestions as to how it can be made better.
Yes, we all know Seoul's air is bad - you need to arrange weekends out of Seoul to take a breath of fresh air - take out your map - if you don't have one, go to Kyobo Bookstore and get one - and find a place you want to travel to. No idea? then just pick something, call 02-1330 tourist info and see how to get there by bus or train, buy a ticket and go. Hey, it's your first experience, expect the unexpected.
things will get better, you just need to take charge is all. You feel everything is out of your control right now and are starting to panic. Don't worry, you made it this far, you can do it.
then again, maybe you can't and you just need to go home? only you can decide - but either way good luck!
