I guess it is a good thing that foreigners I.D. numbers do not work on most Korean sites. Have you ever tried to use your I.D. number to register with Korean sites?
Identity theft: What are friends for?
Identity theft on the Web called a common problem
Most used names and numbers of friends. About 40 percent said they used someone else's number to avoid exposing their own online; a nearly equal number said they did not want to leave evidence of having visited adult or online game sites.

This has got to be my single biggest peeve about Korea.
The amount of things you can do online is amazing, but having to jump through hoops to be allowed the "privilege" of doing so quite negates the convenience aspect, which is the whole point of doing things online. |

There used to be a page run by a Korean-American student at a US high school that generated working joomin numbers based on specific birthdates. Probably illegal to use here, but the output of it was useful for logging onto Korean sites.
You can download a generator program here, but it won't do specific birthdates. Same effect though. |

Those can be useful for just registering on general interest sites.
But it doesn't help you if you actually need your number, for example, paying taxes online and managing other personal financial matters. |

Very true. And the kicker is that they told us last year that the purpose of our alien card update last year was to give us working numbers. No. |

RIGHT....the bastards. And it would have been so easy for them to "make it so". |

I believe the reason they changed our numbers, as they ran out of numbers for REGULAR Koreans, new boys/girls that are born after 2000 I think it is, get numbers that start with 3/4.
My ARC # starts with a 5 |

Not really. Because all of us got new numbers starting with 5. With Koreans and the 3/4 thing, the ones whose cards already started with 1/2 didn't have to get new numbers, like we did. Of course, if you arrived in Korea after 5/2002, you wouldn't have had one of the 1/2 numbers.
Anyway, the MOJ came out and stated that the primary reason for giving foreigners new numbers was because of the rise of Internet commerce and foreigners not being able to register, yadda, yadda, yadda. All a bunch of bullshit.
Needless to say, our numbers still don't work. I took some of the MOJ propaganda to them and asked them why this was so, but never got a satisfactory answer.
What they did say was that the MOJ made available (free of charge! whoop-de-do) a program that "interested websites" could download and execute to allow the registration of foreigner registration numbers on their websites. Of course, there's absolutely no incentive for a Korean website to do so and to my knowledge, none of them have. So, we're back at square one.
The insult of course, is that we were lied to and that it would have been a simple matter for the MOJ to do what it promised. Of course, that would have polluted the purity of the Korean Internet.... |

I believe that's true -- I should have been more precise. |

This program sets off my antivirus scanner! Is there another "clean" version? |

I don't really think about identity theft here in Korea. Back home is another story however. Bank fraud seems to be the rage these days.
The last few years quite a few of my friends and 1 family member have had their personal info hacked into at various banks, and their accounts drained in various ways. The banks are keeping it VERY quiet and even if you want to make a police report, they won't let you make one! They'll tell you the bank has a special fraud squad to deal with it!
Part of the problem is accounts with bank card authorization. Banks have been reducing the number of staff in all their branches and encouraging people to use ATM's instead. Fraudsters don't even need the actual card to get into those accounts anymore. Try and get your money back easily too ha ha. Credit cards have way more fraud protection.
So this is how it goes now:
I give you my money for safekeeping, you let someone steal it, and then when I try to get it back, you say I have to prove I didn't steal my own money!
That's the run around someone in my family has been getting.
My accounts back home have absolutely no bank card access now. |
