I don't see much difference between his situation and Brokedown Palace...or being naive enough to take something through customs at a U.S. airport for some stranger on the plane who asks you to. Being stupid is dangerous.
It's dangerous to live in another country. Period. Sh_it can happen to you and it doesn't have to be fair. Some Korean driver can hit you with his car, then make you take the heat when the cops show up because he can speak the language and you can't. It's a good rule of thumb to regard any Korean that you don't know as potentially dangerous, until you know otherwise. |

Let us not blame Korea for one foreigner's stupidity!
Whether you believe his story or not, you have to be "missing quite a few tools from your shed" to do what he did.
If anything, pity him, but to claim that "Koreans can be very shady" as the cause for his situation is unfair.
He deserved to go to jail. Hopefully, it will prevent others from following in his footsteps. |

well, if you met someone in a canadian or american bar and they asked you to accept packages for them, you'd think they were insane. |

Austin, I am certain you live a very lonely life. Either that or you werent liked much at home and came here to make friends.
Now you have probably succeeded or failed in this regard but somehow you still feel the need to gain attention to yourself and to do that you say stupid stuff.
Next time contemplate thinking before posting.
Oh and that victim signature you had before proves even more what an insignificant moron you are. |

True enough. Notice too, how every "victim" will always get his/her story into the Canadian news media, even if they're only a victim of their own stupidity. |

Yeah, especially if it involves saintly Canadians versus Big Bad Foreigners. The Canadian media can be as parochial and xenophobic as any. There was a case back in the 90s of the young couple who got arrested in Brazil for helping some leftist rebels kidnap a tycoon. The couples' families were all over the media, going on about how their little darlings had no idea that they were involved in a kidnapping. The Canadian press pretty much bought this hook line and sinker, until it was discovered that the kids had known very well what they were doing. For some reason, the Canadian government continued to lobby on the kids' behalf, until the Brazilians sent them home. |

The man, who called himself Kevin, said he had lived in Vancouver, and still knew people there. The two struck up a friendship, and Kevin eventually mentioned that he sometimes had difficulty getting mail from Canada, because he lived in a smaller Korean city.
|
The only person that Kevin knew who could accept mail on his behalf was a foreigner he had just met? Pawlowski must be pretty dense if he fell for that one. |

I agree with most of what you said. If he was innocent, he doesn't deserve to lose parts of his life for being gulible. At the same time, I don't believe this guys story at all. The man states that he is gonna go back to Thailand. My guess is that he is familiar with what goes on over there. Why wouldn't he exercise the same caution over here.
I think he just decided that the risk was worth the reward (drug package). In the end he was right. He got 2 months in jail when he could have gotten 5 years or more. |

Check out the previous thread we've had on Noah and his situation:
ANYONE KNOW THIS GUY?
So what happened to the "My boss set me up because he doesn't want to pay my bonus!" tune he was singing when he was first arrested? Now it's a guy named Kevin who had a package delivered to him under the name of Dale...
Regardless pf whether he is a liar or a patsy I think Mr. Pawlowski should thank his lucky stars he didn't have to do a jail term in Korea or Canada. |

Actually I was thinking the opposite- Austin's post in this thread is one of his better ones. Sure he still has a way to go on the empathy ladder, but we can't all be Tiger Beer. |

When I read this story the word "entrapment" came to mind.
Stupidity is not an indictable offense. |

No, it can just get you booted off Beckerson's board if you give out the password.

It's good that "entrapment" came to mind when you were reading the story. It doesn't mean that's what happened but recognizing entrapment as a possible special defense would be particularly useful were you his attorney in a U.S. court. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have been raised in the Korean court by the Korean attorney incident to the guilty plea.
Relative to stupidity, it can get you locked up, though. |
