Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone has recieved and cease and desist orders while in Seoul for torrenting things or if because we are over here they cannot get our ISP adresses?
I do some torrenting, but then one of my friends pointed out to me that HBO, gave her a cease and desist while in school in the States. So, I'm curious if anyone has gotten into trouble for torrenting while over here?
Also, I'm concerned because I only have internet at work right now, and I really don't want them to get the notice.

I just read that other thread.
It makes me think of back when some punk kid at the university of Washington got his little kiddie script going and tried to port scan me looking for a backdoor. My firewall logged it, I port scanned the whole university back in retailiation.
They called the FBI and said I was a hacker. The FBI contacted the Korea consulate, they contacted my ISP, my ISP called me and asked me WTF was going on. I told them, they said okay, but next time let them know.
Did I stop port scanning punks who were attacking me? Hell no. Was I worried about lawsuits or FBI etc? Nope, because this is a totally different jurisdiction with different laws. Hell, Macs have a port scanner in their utilities package...nothing "hacker" about that.
So I wonder if Demo was just a bit paranoid. I mean come on, they ADVERTISE that you can get 100Mbit service TO DOWNLOAD MOVIES...
I think I've gone through 1-1.5TB of data since I upgraded my internet service. They have never called. I bet I am not even the heaviest user in my neighbourhood either.
If you want to do torrents, use encryption and try to stay away from the big public trackers. Private sites are a lot more safe.
If you want the newest stuff, NEWSGROUPS is much safer and impossible for anyone to track you without a court order to your ISP. |

Agreed, but isn't a popular opinion on this site |

Ok, now I'm going to sound completely dumb, but how do you use encryption when doing torrents? |

Azureus has that option as well.
You will find that on private trackers almost everyone has that flipped on...
Also with newsgroups you can use encryption as well...
So if you are careful, you shouldn't get caught...especially in Korea.
Once again, stay away from the big torrent sites for hot movies/games...newsgroups is like 1000x safer for snagging that stuff. (or go the way of private torrent sites...or hit up a PC bang) |

Thanks so much. Hopefully my little foray before knowing this wont bite me in the ass.
I'm going to look into the private stuff now.
Oh, before I forget, what consitutes a big site? Are mininova.org or thepiratebay.com big sites? |

Video piracy is alive and well in the ROK. Don't believe me, take a pit stop outside the terminal building or nanjin arcade at Yongsan. There are easily 10,000 titles for sale on any given day and at 2500 won each you can bet they are not legal copies.
Don't sweat it. |
