My wife loves them. Well, I should say she gets hooked on one drama at a time, and she follows it, not wanting to miss what happens next.

My view is that Korean dramas are all the same. It's always about family issues with lots of arguing, or they are about relationships between boyfriend/girlfriend.

My question then, to you clued-in waegooks of Dave's, is: Why don't Korean dramas involve any other story lines or subject matter? Korean movies deal with all kinds of interesting topics, but Korean television dramas are stuck in a self-limiting genre. Why aren't there any dramas about cops, lawyers, hospital staffs, prisons, mafia, etc...?

If there was more of a variety of dramas out there, I might actually be interested in watching them.

While it's true there are so many cookie-cutter dramas with the same old stories,

There have been, there are and there will be. Where have you been? Trust me on this and actually start searching. If you have trouble (if your wife doesn't really help you), then I can help you. Smile

There are dramas about cops and hospitals, anyway. But they're still shit because they have the same story lines as all the other dramas with a twist or two thrown in.

Why don't they make different ones? Well, they don't need to.

Um, there are and have been many dramas about cops, hospitals, law etc. It's just they tend to all have the same format in the end. Some are pretty good, some are hit and miss, some are impossible to sit through.

And every show ends with the same close-up of someone with a tear rolling down their cheek.

Hmm same cliff hanger every week should get boring shouldn't it?

Congratulations mate.

Imagine how miserable you'd be if you'd chosen a women who likes Korea dramas.

Give yourself a pat on the back.

Actually, given the choice, I'd prefer my wife watch Korean dramas. At least there's the redeeming quality of my perhaps practicing my Korean listening skills or learning a new Korean word/expression...

Get your wife to watch The L-word. The same drama cliches with good
girl on girl action.

Their "cop" and "doctor" dramas aren't what we're used to. Whereas American shows like SVU and ER focus on the job, Korean ones don't. They'll have the first few episodes show something interesting like that, but then after a few weeks it turns to the all too typical settings (soju tents, fish markets. houses with terrible furniture) and typical stories (love triangels, lame family intrigue, lame ass gangsters that somehow get their ass handed to them by a 5 foot 2 ajumma.)

i like korean dramas but i'm really picky... i don't watch every drama on TV... my most favorite is the "Sandglass" (Moraeshigye)... i saw this on DVD... it's a 24 part series but it is really good that i just spent 3 days watching it... 8 hours a day!

but then i'm not korean Smile

There is little variety because people don't demand better. if a large chunk of the population refused to watch these cookie cutter shows, they'd be forced to be innovative.

They also still have the illusion that the Korean wave is doing well in some countries.

doggyji, it's been a while, but you're still an unabashed apologist/simplifier regarding all Korean b.s.
