In short, my question is can and should I stay at a goshiwon while looking for a public school or hagwon in Seoul? Or, shoud I get into a public school immediately? Money right now is not an issue, I just want to make sure I can get a goshiwon without an employer and if there are any other issues that may come up. I think it would be best to visit schools, and in a month or two pick a decent one. Can this be done with an E2 visa change of location, or do I have to make the move immediately which would not give me time to shop around for a new school?
Below are more details of my situation.
April will by my 6th month in Korea. I work way out in the country, and I would like to move to Seoul. I have already visited Seoul, and I am in Pyeongtaek now. Yes, I do want to move to the city.
So, my problem is getting a replacement teacher for my current school. I may have found one, but he needs to go through the whole visa process. He is from the UK and will be going to Thailand for his interview. Right now he is only on a tourist visa.
Is it legal to work with a school on a tourist visa while getting the E2 visa paperwork finalized? I hear so many offers to come to Korea on a tourist visa and do a visa run to Japan. I never considered Thailand, but he has taught there for 10 years, so he knows that area more.
If anyone has any arguments why I should stay out in the country and stay with my current job, please let me know. Any pitfalls I might encounter with this switch? I know I will be without a job for a bit, and I have money saved to stay afloat a few months before making a decision.
The other teacher who came here had been offered a job that fell through, so now he is trying to get a school and this would be my way out of the school and give him the opportunity make some much needed cash. |
