Here's an article from today that looks like something I'd get from one of my students. Anyone else think it's a bit shameful for one of the biggest news sources in the US to have this many basic English mistakes??

One more reason not to turn to CNN for news. |

The state of writing/grammar in general is atrocious. I am amazed when I come across a piece anywhere WITHOUT errors.
Edit: I can't believe I spelled atrocious wrong on this comment, even if it was a typo!

I concur, OP.

Yes, indeed, but it doesn't show signs of abating. Many moons ago as an undergrad history and English major I took a couple of courses usually reserved for journalism majors. I was amazed even then at how poor their facility with language was. And they were in one of the highest ranked journalism schools in the nation.
Of course, CNN would tell you that they're typing news-on-the-go (and there might be an element of truth in that given the state of media reportage today).
What's worse is Yahoo News. Not a day goes by that I don't find an article or two riddled with errors that cannot be explained away as typos.
I think some of it stems from indifference, and from the attitude of so many English professors who are enamored with po-mo gibberish.
Just another sign of the times, I'm afraid. |

Think you can do better?
Try finding a job in journalism:

Now try finding a job where anyone besides a 20-something girl on an allowance from her parents can live decently.
Want to be an assistant managing editor? No problem, if you are willing to work for about $2,000 a month (with taxes, and having to pay for your own apartment).

Want a job as a journalist in Ohio?
No problem:
http://journalismjobs.com/Search_Jobs.cfm
There are 11 jobs open for a state of 11 million.
I see Tennessee has two jobs open, with a population of 5.6 million.
Florida, with a population of 16 million and 39 jobs open, is booming. But many of them are with the Times-Union, which seems to have purged its staff again, probably so they can find new warm bodies willing to work cheaper than the deceased. I wonder how long these jobs will last this time?
Are you still wondering why the state of journalism in the United States sucks?
OK, I'll spell it out for you. There aren't enough jobs. But there are plenty of job applicants. So the corporations that own the newspaper chains figure they don't have to pay anything more than enough to attract recent college grads to stay for a few years.
Some talented journalists are lucky enough to move up to the megapapers. But all but the biggest are laying off. So most of those with talent leave. Talentless bureaucratic journalists in search of a pension are what remain, move into editing slots, who then hire talentless warm bodies to produce gray, inoffensive copy to chink up the holes between the ads.
If the reader is lucky, these editors will know how to spell basic things, like their names. But don't count on it.

Well, I remember a writer saying that many people who didn't go past the 9th grade in the old days were better at using the English language than many people who graduate today and actually finish the 12th grade.
Do you think that's true? |
