I've been told: "Plenty of foreigners, restaurants, bars and
malls. There are also mountains, and the sea. Easy access to subways and buses to Seoul." Is this correct? I know Incheon has about 2.5 mill people living there, is it like a mini version of Seoul (have enough to do when not working)? And what is Yeonsu like? Is it one of the better areas there? |

Plenty of foreigners - Not, that would be Seoul
restaurants - Yes, only Korean. Interesting restaurants are in Seoul
bars - Yes, but only Korean style. i.e. crap music and booze
malls - Yes, but only Korean style where the entire thing is owned by
one business
Mountains - Yes
Sea - Yes
Access to subway - Yes, About 75 minutes to Seoul. Stops at 11:00PM
mini version of Seoul - Not, Seoul is cosmopolitan. Yeonsu? Hahahaha

Remember "Cohiba's Rule":
Think twice before you live outside of Seoul. "In Seoul" and
"outside of Seoul" are like two different countries. Seoul
is an interesting place with variety and venues for most
tastes. Outside of Seoul you will find a homogeneous Korean
culture. I don't mean this in a bad way, but you will never
find things like: French, Greek, Indian or any other ethnic
foods. Markets that sell sherry, pate, pastrami, ricotta cheese.
Specialty shops that sell dart accessories, cuban cigars or
cowboy boots.
The FFF RULE: FFF=Fun For Foreigners.
If FFF in Seoul = 100, then FFF decreases at
1/distance. So 2km from Seoul FFF=1/2(100)=50;
10km from Seoul FFF=1/10(100)=10. This rule is
a rule for nightlife, food and foreign products only.
Nature etc. is on a different scale altogether.
This means you will be wasting a lot of time commuting
to Seoul. This is especially a drag if you have been
boozing on a Friday night and there are no buses or
trains.
I, unfortunately, live in Incheon where the FFF factor
is almost in the negative range. I know! |

Im moving to Incheon in a month or so... sending out docs via courier in next few days.
Got a few friends out there... I guess I will be fine with that... plus Seoul aint too far.
What times do the subway to and from Seoul stop at nights? |

I found the area kind of boring when I lived there a few years ago. It was too far away from Seoul, and I was spending all my time on buses or subways. OTOH, it's a short cab ride to the arts center area, which is OK, and it's near Songdo ... which was nice when I lived there but has probably changed a lot since. It just depends on your preferences and on how good the job is, really. |

Everyone who moves to Incheon for the first time thinks "Oh, it's close to seoul."
Trust me, after a while that hour + transit time there and back really gets old. |

If I had to live in Incheon, I'd prefer to be near the arts center. |

I did for a while and it was hardly worth it. You're still on an indirect subway branch line.
Arts center?? never went, neither did any of my coworkers. Did we miss something?
However I liked Incheon for its proximity to the coast and port: plenty of easy day or weekend trips out from there. |

I like it, but I think I'm in the minority. All the foreigners I've met while here have done runners, plan to run, plan to go home and never come back if they can make it to the end of their contract, or plan on going to Seoul/Pusan next year.
They all flock to Seoul on the weekends because they find this area boring.
The only guys I know who stay here are married.
I think this place is great. Well, Yeonsu-dong is great. And, by far, it's one of the best places to be if you have to be in Incheon. Bubyoung is closer to Seoul and on the same sub line, if you want to be a bit closer to Seoul. If you don't care about Seoul (like me) then Yeonsu is a great place.
PM me with the school you are thinking about in Yeonsu. I know all the chains and mom and pops that hire FTs and I know people who have or have worked in almost all of them. There are many to be wary of.
If it's a PS, take it if you can handle being outside of Seoul. |

i live across the street from the arts center and quite like it. i do go to seoul often and it can be a pain at times, but there are a few perks, such as better air quality, less crowded (generally, incehon can still be crowded at times). bupyeong is maybe 15 minutes away and has one or two good foreigner bars. my area also has a place called rodeo square which is fun, especially in summer. ive had many drunken adventures there, all positive.
as far as the sea...there are some nice views and walking areas - and i think incheon is a few degrees warmer than seoul in winter - but there isn't really a beach or anything like that.
if you are someone who needs to be in the center of it all, go to seoul. im a bit of a homebody, but even if you arent i think incheon can be good - provided you don't need foreigners around you all the time, and don't mind commuting when you want to go see a palace or museum. to say incheon is a mini-seoul is not acurate. its better to say that its less-seoul, or diluted seoul.
hope this helps |

Hey kara_gina:
Actually the best thing Incheon has is the island Deokjeok-Do off
the coast.
We have about 5 big parties there a year. The beach is filled with
mighty whities camping, drinking and having fun.
Keep looking on the General section of Dave's for when I post the
details.
Or, just PM me.
Two parties coming up. First and second weekends of May. |
