|
|
I have a few target responses to the greeting "How are you" (I'm great/fine/alright/pretty good) but I'm having a time trying to come up with some kind of communicative game for them. They're very very low level, they can basically say "hi" and "I'm (name)" so there's very little lee-way here. I requested to not teach beginners b/c I'm a greenhorn but here I am. Any ideas would be great. |

Must it be, "How are you?"
My basic Introductions class consists of name, origin, and hobbies.
"What's your name?" "My name is..."
"Where are you from?" "I'm from..."
and/or "Where do you come from?" "I come from..."
You can do age, too, but since they are all usually the same age (except in an adult class), that can be a bit boring and doesn't add much.
Then they work in pairs, ask and answer each other's questions, then they introduce their partners to the class.
You can also include hobbies if time permits and they have enough ability (which it sounds like in your case they may not):
"What's your hobby?" "My hobby is..."
That is usually more than enough for the Intro class. |

I'd print out and give each a photo of a celeb, cartoon figure etc....
They then go around the class introducing "themself". Also, I use role play cards a lot and they are so handy for taking another identity. Look at EFL Classroom and just uploaded some nice one in the latest forum discussion.
Cheers,
DD

I just work a mini-lesson on greetings at the head of each class, building on the 'pleasantries' throughout the term. Slight variations and changing up the order of what's asked/said when helps them learn listening and break out of the robot memorization tendency, I find. |

Oh, please don't ask about hobbies!!! I don't think I've ever been asked about my "hobbies" in my life!! (Well, outside of Korea anyway!)
Better questions are "What do you like to do?" or "What are you into?" or even the simple "Do you like X?" |
