Agreed, Theroux is a fine edgy travel writer. Heres an interesting article he published a week or so ago in the Guardian: http://books.guardian.co.uk/departments/travel/story/0,,2267330,00.html (I stumbled across it at www.aldaily.com -- a nice net resource).

Another master of the genre: Pico Ayer.

Thanks Schwa! The very thing I needed after today.

The other thing I always liked about Theroux, especially when I was younger and had not read as widely, was his constant referral to other books - whether he was reading them on his journey or had been reminded of one - immediately making me curious and wanting to read them as well. Usually this happened when I was on a boat or in a small town far from any library or person who liked reading much.

I was rarely disappointed. Some were perhaps beyond my experience, and had to be laid aside. But upon coming back to them, I saw and understood more. He broadened my curiosity and led me to other writers, where I discovered connections between them. I tried new writers and learned, sometimes just by reading the back cover, whether what I held in my hand was worth the investment of time and money. And they say you can't judge a book by its cover.

This deepened both my experience of reading and my view of my own life and the lives of those around me.

I realized, isn't this really the point of reading?
