If you are on a plan then yes, you can pause service, keep your plan and use the same phone and number when you return. There is a small charge for this service.
If your phone is a prepaid calling one, then yes, simply re-activate it on your return. You will probably get a new number but there is no extra fee.

Will GSM phones work in Korea? Can I just buy a SIM card in Korea and pop it in? What would some of y'all with experience recommend? |

Foreign phones do NOT work in Korea (except as global roaming phones) with your foreign phone number.
The system here is CLOSED to outside phones. You CANNOT get a local number for a phone from another country.

Do you recommend "burners"? i.e. the prepaid wireless? Are these common? |

You can get a phone here for as little as 30k won. There is a phone shop on EVERY corner of every city in the country.
Rates for prepaid service (most common for foreigners) are 26 minutes for 10k won.
There is no hookup or activation fee.
