They all have their fans and they all have someone who is not happy with them. I have, at different times, used Orange Edu and Planet People with acceptable service.
Please let me repeat an old post of mine.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Really, when it comes to a recruiter, who cares?
A recruiter is nothing more than an introduction to an employer.
REPEAT: A recruiter is nothing more than an introduction to an employer.
Hello Mr. English speaker this is Mr Hakwon owner.
Mr. hakwon owner, this is Mr. English speaker.
Mr. English speaker, here is the contract. Please read and sign.
School, here is the signed contract. Pay me.
Good bye.
-You are not paying them anything (or you shouldn't be).
-THEY DO NOT WORK FOR YOU! - They work for the school.
-They owe you nothing once you get here.
-They are not your friend.
-They are not your baby sitter.
-They cannot help you if things go to *beep* after you get here.
Beyond that it is YOUR responsibility to check the school out.
Do NOT trust ANY recruiter. They are like used car salesmen. They will lie and sell their soul to get the signature on the contract.
Do your own DUE DILLIGENCE in regards to the school or get burned.
Use the recruiters for what they are. Use more than one and keep going until you get what you want. There is no rush and there is certainly no shortage of jobs.
When it comes to the school - again - repeat - Do your own DUE DILLIGENCE.
1st - READ the contract over very carefully. If that doesn't scare you away then...
The best you can do is minimize the risk by talking to MORE THAN ONE of the foreign staff and ask POINTED AND SPECIFIC QUESTIONS (*when the boss is NOT listening over their shoulder). Don't accept non-specific answers and broad generalizations.
No foreign staff references to talk (directly and via e-mail) to = walk away now.
Accept NO EXCUSES for any reason.

^ very true, but i can still recommend my recruiter (i really, really like them, they helped me a lot this year!). alison at canadian connection
www.canconx.com
i know people from canada (of course), america, and australia (yeah, i'm a bit surprised too) that have used them and been happy. a lot of recruiters just dump you in korea and get their paycheck from your school, but canadian connection actually helps you with problems while you're here.
there are other recruiters that people have recommended on dave's if you search...plus many warnings
good luck |

If you're looking at Busan or Daegu, I'd reccommend Kim and Joe's. They were very good to me, helping me find a place (rent stipend instead of housing provided) and they helped get the school to honour the contract when the school tried to get out of paying return airfare.
PM me if you want more info. |

I second this nomination. Alison is great and Canadian Connection has a solid reputation for getting people good contracts. |

There are many recruiters that don't provide accurate information. For example;
( 1 ) www.canconx.com
( 2 ) FAQ
( 3 ) Working Conditions
What deductions come out of my salary?
Monthly health insurance premiums (roughly 25,000-35,000 Won per month)
 Income tax (3-7%)
Pension (which is reimbursed at the end of the year)
>Income tax isn't deducted according to a fixed percentage rather a sliding scale. If your monthly salary was 2,200,000 Korean Won per month, your employer would deduct the following below from your monthly salary:
( 1 ) 2,200,000 > 39,930 Korean Won > NTS website
http://nts.go.kr/eng/help/help_52.asp?top_code=H001&sub_code=HS05&ssub_code=HSE2
3% > 66,000 Korean Won
4% > 88,000 Korean Won
5% > 110,000 Korean Won
6% > 132,000 Korean Won
7% > 154,000 Korean Won |

erm.....Right!
I'd really be paying attention to Garykasparov and Ttompatz here.
Getting a recruiter with consistently good contracts is not going to happen. They'll palm you off with the crap ones, before trying to give you (if they have them) 'better' ones.
I doubt that many here have what is considered a good contract. Recruiters want money for you. Plain and simple. They'll introduce you and then they're gone. A one time only relationship. Even my recruiter who got me my good contract at the PS made me trapse from Incheon down to Daejeon on the bus where they collected me.....after a 16 hour flight. Cheap! |

recruiters have been a waste of my time so far. i contacted a bunch (orangedu being one of them) but most of them sent me one or two jobs that SORTA met my criteria, and i after i told them i wasn't interested in those one or two offers, i haven't heard from them since.
all in all, i think recruiters are just one more level of BS you have to sift through when searching for a job. it makes finding offers easier, but now you have TWO people with ulterior motives to deal with (recruiter and school).
what i ended up doing was just contacting the school itself. schools probably prefer this anyway since they don't have to pay a recruiter. |

So, without a recruiter, how are you supposed to know if the school is good? Does it all just boil down to talking to teachers who are already there? |

How do you get in contact with the teachers at those schools? Blind inquiry with the school? |

Yeah, I mean, that's my issue. I don't want to apply to a job without having spoken to the extant teachers beforehand. |
