rackdown on Illegal Foreign Teacher Brokers
April 1, 2008 9:19 am

At the end of an almost completely unrelated piece in the Hanguk Ilbo, I noticed a blurb that police planned to launch a 70-day crackdown starting today (April 1) on brokers trading in unqualified foreign teachers. Which means I suspect more than a few teachers will get netted in the process.

I always wondered why they never punished the recruiters who provide illegal teachers. I guess someone did some research.

Yet, for them to actually track down someone who beat and attempted to kidnap a 10 year old, the president actually has to show up at the station and chastise them.

In Ulsan, the word on the street is that a Korean female recruiter and her boyfriend (Canadian and no degree) just got busted, but got off the hook by turning in other illegal workers (they turned in a few Russians). They had to pay a hefty fine, but he was allowed to stay in Korea. To make matters worse, he is still bringing his friends over from Canada (no degrees).

Actually that's a good thing, because I guarantee you the cops are watching him, and the next time he'll be deported permanently.

That's still pretty smalltime though, it would be nice to see them grow some balls and go after the major operators like SLI and others that place E2s illegally in jobs outside of their visa.

Maybe if they did, it would force the government to rethink their position on working restrictions of E2s, which would ultimately eliminate the existence of these slime bucket "middlemen" altogether.

so, now it's recruiters and teachers?

good thing hogwan owners are all honest, christian saints. Rolling Eyes otherwise i'd be inclined to believe that hogwan owners are the ones creating the entire, cheating, lying, cheating, racketeering, mess.

*i know i said cheating twice, it's just that they do such an awful lot of it.

I can't prove it, but I have a theory that this is now happening because of all of the government money involved in recruiting.

Also, the inside word is that all public school teaching job openings are "sold" through a "recruiter" who is nothing more than a relative of one of the people high-up in the Korean gov't. These relatives worked together to turn a tidy profit off of the government. If it's at all true, which it may or may not be, I wonder if this is having a negative effect on the number of positions which can be filled, and how quickly.

As was told to me, this person gets to make money off of selling recruiters the chance to place teachers (by taking half of the recruiting fee). This individual doesn't have control of all of the jobs, and may be pushing the police, using their gov't influence, to go after the competition so he can make more money.

This is all just a guess, but it really seems to make sense to me. It's a pretty tricky way for some gov't people to make money off of the process.

That is sooo paranoid. Why to believe that you'd have to believe that "Corruption" was Korea's middle name.

And that can't be the case because, to have a middle name one (or 'it' in this case) would have to have a first and a last name. So, there.

But wait, now that I think of it, this country is informally known as South Korea, so it actually does have a first and last name.

Scratch my complaint. Very Happy Laughing Very Happy

Oh...I know I'm going to "catch it" for this comment...however...it's been in the back of my head for a while.

Haven't Canadian nationals who have taken advantage of their tourist status for years now...put us in the position we're in??

I don't want to generalize...even though I do hear South Park's "Blame Canada" somewhere in the distance...but imagine that...a Korean woman and a Canadian husband pulling this...I never would have guessed.

I realize there are plenty of Canadian nationals who have come here legally in the past...and continue to do so...however...there have been a fair share of Canadian citizens who have performed "retail teaching" in Korea.

I just thought it was about time somebody said it.

Let the rage ensue....

So, are Canadians similar to Koreans in respect to their inability to deal with the truth?

Seriously, if Canadians think that the rampant tourist visa abuse committed by some Canadian citizens has gone unnoticed, they are sorely WRONG.

However, it is a very political issue because if Korea were ever to do anything about it (IE, shorten the length of the visa stay), you can seriously bet that the Canadian government would certainly reciprocate by reducing the stay of Koreans in Canada.
And if Korea then cracks down on the Americans in Korea on a C3 visa stamp, you can almost count on the US hearing about it and reconsidering Korea's entry into the VWP...

The more Koreans start to think about it, the more they have to look at what they have to gain and lose diplomatically..................
