My contract states as does the law that I should have Health Insurance and be paying towards the pension program/ For Health insurance my owner claims that all teachers are covered by AIG in case of a major problem and don't therefore need NHI. As for the pension she claims that she hasn't got a letter from the pension office yet despite the fact I've just completed my 5th month. When I brought up these issues in a letter she offered me a letter of release to either find a new job or return to Canada. If I don't get the NHI and pension should I just go home or am I just doing what they want me to do by leaving? |

To me it does look like she has offered you the letter of release in the hope that you will not go to the authorities about her not doing the right thing about your health or pension. Legally she MUST pay for both of them (and I think she knows that) - as you already know - and she is trying to get away with not paying for either of them. Offering you the letter of release is her attempt to get you to just leave rather than do anything else - so to answer you question I think that she does want you to do what she wants and just leave.

She probably hasn't been paying tax either, and you may be hit with that yourself.
I'd turn her ass in.
Also remember that you'll have to back-pay any health insurance to the date you first came here, before you're able to get it. That means she owes you half of several hundred dollars (and you'll have to come up with the rest). Do you want to have to pay ALL of it later, because she never paid her half?
That could be your reality.
If you plan on staying in Korea, don't screw yourself by letting her get away scot-free. |

Best jump on this right away...it's costly to wait. She is definitely scruwing you over. It's unlikely she's afraid...she probably just doesn't want the hassle of a teacher who knows Korean law... |

Find out where the local pension office is in your area.
Go there.
Show them your ARC card.
When they show you that she hasn't made any deposits towards YOUR account, tell them you are very unhappy with your situation. Ask them to contact a labor attorney. They will do that. Show them your contract as well.
Let them take care of the rest.
Then ask her for a letter of release and find a much nicer job.
Trust me. I'm speaking to you from experience. Do it.
She deserves it. |
