I'm in Rochester, New York and ordered a notarized background check last week. All I got was a background check for the Greater Rochester area. I called and they don't do state-level checks. The State police are pretty much just patrol and transportation, when I went to them, they said they do fingerprinting but I have to get a record review packet from the State capital's Criminal Justice Bureau. The packet is free, and I can get the fingerprints for free, but the application is $50!! Plus I have to get it sent back to Monntgomery County (why not Ablany go figure) for the Clerk and then back to Albany for the apostille. So that's anoither $10, plus the Visa which is another $45, and then all the mailing and time to do this.

I've called the new york consulate and they don't seem to know anything. I explained the whole situation and they just repeated "go to police department and get a criminal backgroud check and apostille, okay?" They either have no clue how to do their jobs or they are incapable of comprehending English at the level of at least a 6-year old. I'm supposed to go out to a public school on 25 May and I am encountering one problem after another with this application process.

Long story short: is my local background worthless or will it pass? I know the KIS is too "special" to know that local and state (and national) records are all kept separate and the background checks prove nothing, other than the fact I can waste hours of my time jumping through hoops. And if I'm not mistaken the FBI check takes long, though cheaper, and is impossible to notarize, clerk-ize, and apostille-ize??

I should add that official paperwork for my whole life before lists me as permanent address in Malta, NY. I have lived in Rochester (b/c of college) for the past four years. Will the local check be trhown out because the city does not match permanent addresses on drivers' licenses? I also filled out my visa application with my permanent address since I will be moving back to Malta very shortly and cannot have my passport mailed to a house where my rent will expire.

I'm from the Capital Region of Albany as well, and I just went to my local police dept. Waited there 5 minutes...they wrote it for me and a notary public sealed it for me.

And you got into Korea all right?

I was just worried because my report says in bold THIS WILL NOT INCLUDE ANY ARRESTS RESULTING IN CONVICTIONS BY ANY AGENCY OTHER THAN THE ROCHESTER POLICE DEPARTMENT.

So I got worried. I've tried asking more people (not through this forum) but they were all Canadians, and their police systems seem more logical and consistent.

Thanks for the response, though. Sets me at ease in case the state one takes too long. I'd prefer to not do it, but I don't want to see myself sending the docs to the consulate and getting a "No."

I'm glad to hear someone from the area getting out in the world (too many of us are rarely heard from outside of the state). I'm also tired of "New York" coming to mean only NYC and then everything north of that labeled as "practically up in Canada."
