High Blood Pressure-my experience at the gym

Do any of you have high blood pressure? It is genetic for me, as well as high cholesterol. Anyway, I went to the gym yesterday and the trainer took my blood pressure before I began any exercising. The trainer really pumped up the thing and it was very tight around my arm. Tighter than I have ever felt it. Anyway my BP was way up there. I remember the distolic was above 100, which I seriously doubt. I am surprised she didn't try again. Anyway, afer that she left me at the running machine and that was the end of the training LOL.

Anyway, those with high BP, what do you do to control it?

Quit smoking
Eat Bland food
Don't drink
etc?

I also have those genetic conditions, but they haven't started to affect me yet. I think my lifestyle and diet are reasonable and haven't caught up with me yet.

If you don't trust his blood pressure tests, go to a doctor.

To control it....exercise is the single best way. If you're overweight, lose some weight lickety-split.

If you drink coffee, cut donw and drink it with milk only.

Eliminate sugar.


Cut down on alcohol.

I've had low blood pressure most of my life-I'm surprised it didn't skyrocket teaching in Ontario

EDIT: in response to the next post. I'm fortunate, I haven't had a bad experience since mid September. I get a few nods, and I chat with a Korean fellow, who to his credit is there 5 or 6 times week because he needs to be.

Of course, why put up with it? It's the same as the subway, or when I am lining up to get a bus ticket-I'm just fortunate at my gym

I'm surprised people put up with the nonsense Koreans try to pull at the gyms here. OP, did you want your blood pressure measured, or did the person force themselves on you?

As well as the pain inflicted by the way the test was done. The stress caused by the encounter would be enough to cause a false reading.

Go to a clinic. They tend to be more laid back. Wait at least 10-20 minutes to calm down. Then take it again.

They request it be done once a month. I thought it to be a good thing, now I am not sure. She was working with a Korean guy and I think just wanted to get it over with. I am seriously thinking of buying my own blood pressure apparatus and monitoring it myself. I did join the gym and am doing 1/2 hour of aerobic type exercises almost everyday as well as a routine of strength conditioning with weights. Also, will get some potassium, calcium, magnesium supplements, as I have been having occurances of hand cramps and am quite certain I am a bit anemic in those areas. Tomorrow, I am going to a hospital for a full physical.

Also, I am going to increase my intake of alkaline based foods because most of my diet is acid based. These measures should help a lot in the longer term.

You don't need to buy the appartus, if you visit any of the larger hospitals in Seoul, you'll find they have the machines in the lobbies of their clinics that you can use for free.

Good lifestyles choices and exercise are incredibly effective in helping control hypertension, however if you feel it is too high you should consult a doctor about getting a prescription to get it under control.

Your blood pressure is normal if it's below 120/80 mm Hg � but some data indicate that 115/75 mm Hg should be the gold standard. Once blood pressure rises above 115/75 mm Hg, the risk of cardiovascular disease begins to increase.

if you'd like to meet with a cardiologist, I'd be happy to give you a referral.

Lifestyle changes are great and I will make some, but I do not want to quit living in in order to live longer. My blood pressure is like 134/ over I don't know because I do not trust the last reading.

I will take medications only if I have to.

If i need to see a cardio, I will contact you Dr. Love

If you don't want to make necessary life changes inorder to change your health why are you bitching and making useless threads?

well I just got back from the clinic at our university and my BP was 130/100, The nurse told me it was ok for my age and not to worry about it. Nonetheless, I will still do the gym 5 days and week, start drinking something called water ans watching my diet. I think it was a good wake up call.

Oh, Temporary, you chose a great name! To me, I am not bitching and the thread is not useless at all. Of course, you have a right to your opinion, after all they are "Temporary" LOL.

Anyway, I appreciate all the feedback and will take heed to it.

I apologize I am sometimes a dick. I realy had to change my life around myself I have made many sacrifices and I ended up liking my new life more then my old one. I use to be size 44 pants now I fit into Size 28 Asian.

I suffered from high blood pressure for years. But I generally avoided pills until I spent time in hospital last year for an unrelated illness. The doctors and nurses kept mentioning my blood pressure and strongly insisting that I take medication. I mentioned it to my local doctor in Seoul and he prescribed me a combination of two pills. They didn't help, so he added a third. My blood pressure has dropped to normal. No problems at all. No side effects. Oddly I don't know the names of the medicine (as it comes in unmarked plastic bags) but I have to get my prescription refilled this weekend. I can find out the English and Korean names for you.

Also, on the news last night (AFN, 6 o'clock) there was a segment on a new breakthrough drug for high blood pressure. It's supposed to amazing. Oddly though, they didn't give a name. Maybe it's not on the market quite yet.

Anyway, if you want the name of the pills that worked perfectly for me (and my blood pressure was way up there) pm me. I'll ask my doctor on the weekend.

LAst night I had a mildly unpleasant experience-I usually hit the gym right after school, but I was feeling really drained so I ate dinner first, which meant peak time around 8pm. Busier, and a trainer there-after the second "Go away" buddy stopped hassling the token foreigner.
