I don't know too much about Tongducheon/Dongducheon except that there's a US Army camp there and if I remember right it looks out to N. Korea |

A short train ride to the south is Seoul. Plenty of play places there and if it's not too late, you can train back to TDC. It does NOT overlook north Korea. Lots of geography in between TDC and the DMZ. |

I'm assuming it's a horrible place, as the Korean handbook I used during my first year had many negative things to say about it. This book is comprehensive and has been 100% accurate when I've used it, and it basically describes Dongducheon as a scuzzy hive of booze and prostitution. Sorry! Or, maybe....congratulations. I don't know you after all |

I 100% agree that around Casey is hellish. I'd avoid it if I were you, unless you get overcome by a crazy hankering for a subway sandwich or badly burned movies.
Aside from that, no, the entirety of Donducheon is not that bad. There are mountains (although from what I can tell you're not likely to get it to yourself very often). There's Sanjeong (sp?) lake which makes for an alright day out. The smaller towns further down from Bosan (the Casey stop on the subway), Jihaeng, Deokjeong, Uijeongbu are far enough away to avoid most of the prozzies but close enough to find something to do.
Also yes, Seoul is only about an hour and half away. About 2 hours for south of the river. The last train back is about 10.30 (11?) though, which is pretty early to end your night out. In that case, staying in Seoul for a night is pretty cheap.
I don't live in Donducheon, so I can't be that much help. But two years in Yang Ju so far, and I've managed to entertain myself. Good luck with your job. |

I went up there my first year here with a Korean friend who was showing me around Seoul and the immediate area. We drove up there, parked at some depot/tour spot jumped on a bus then went up to a museum-like place. There was a large building that was monument or something for peace and unification. Up on a hill a little above the monument/museum was a small temple with a large drum inside that you could hit. They also had a PA system piping propaganda across the channel/water into N. Korea. We could see Korean military walking patrols through the woods and hills on the other side of the fence from the building we were at. When we went to the building we had a military escort walking down the road with the bus and had to be waved through a checkpoint.
My friend told me we were at Tongducheon, so maybe we were close by. I don't remember the name of the actual place I just know that was where he said we were. Do you know the actual place or have an idea, I'd like to go back there. |

Everything everybody else has said so far is true: it is a pit. Also, it has some of the highest yellow dust readings in the country, and is also on the watch list for malaria and has a lot of mosquitos.
Enjoy your stay. |
