So I was told yesterday. I'm with SMOE. Any strategies? I know this is bullsh!t but I'm willing to tolerate once or twice to get him off my back. Otherwise, what is my recourse?

I've fixed a few PCs in my school.

Troubleshooting sound systems from time to time.

I should have handed them some formal billing.

I used to charge out a $90/hr when I did field work.

Not to be too hard on myself, but I have no maintaining skills. This just seems like "I'm the boss, I'll come up with stuff to do." Also, I was in the middle of planning a teacher's class lesson. WTF?

What kind of maintenance? Mopping the hallways or what?

I was not told specifically, but I imagine it's that kind of thing. The school is brand new so there's probably some odds and ends that need fixing.

IF he meant cleaning your classroom / English room - straightening things up, picking up the papers, etc, then yup...

IF he means mopping the floors or repairing anything then it is NOT within the scope of your job. Politely say so and leave it at that.

Totally agree. Look at your contract and see if you are required to under your job duties. If not, ask the principal to find that clause.

Exactly.

For your classroom or the EZ, have the students tidy up after they leave. It's one of my requirements. I don't allow them to leave if the room is a mess. They have to clean after themselves.

I'm sure he means general maintenance. He won't even tell me though he just tells my co-teacher in Korean. Nobody likes the guy, the teachers can't stand him and my co teacher says she's embarrassed to even have to translate for him. He is not liked nor respected. Yesterday the copy machine guy came in and cursed him out to some subject teachers.

This is a standard work for male teachers (the one that speaks English said it was "bullsh**"--his words), so it's not like I'm being singled out. I know this is horseflop but I'm concerned about a perceived exceptionalism, which is why I'm tempted to agree to it once and then play it hard line.

Younger Korean teachers, especially males, on short-term contracts very freaquently get tasked with supervising cleaning, maintnance, landscaping, milk hand-outs, etc. It's just part of being a teacher here. As long as it's something that only takes a few minutes here or there I'd still consider myself relatively lucky.

You strike me as one who deserves to be treated like a 3D worker.

At my schools there are people in charge of maintenance, fixing stuff, etc.

Homeroom teachers are supposed to supervise cleaning the room. I used to supervise students cleaning my room last year in the EZ. Help out mopping, whatever. It's a good chance to talk with students in a small group setting.

I don't clean. My kids are always squabbling amongst themselves as to who gets to clean my English classroom. The room is spotless.
