What would be the cheapest way to fly to Hong Kong from Seoul? Are there any cheap airlines, at least cheaper than Cathay, KAL and the like?

Sometimes with Hong Kong, it is cheaper to fly via Macau airport or Shenzhen airport (mainland side).

There is also a low cost carrier called "Hong Kong Airlines" operating to regional airports (Daegu, Cheongju etc) which recently started.

For ICN-HKG-ICN at the moment I'd say 500,000 won maximum including tax, otherwise it is not good value.

Three years ago before the fuel surcharges and spike in prices, you could commonly do HKG (and Thailand for that matter) for about 300,000 won.

If you watch the Cathay website you can often get packages (3-4 night) including airfare, transfers and hotel for as little as 465k won. There are some restrictions but they can be a good get-away deal.

The usual airfare runs about 465k won ICN-HKG-ICN.

Go directly to the Cathay Pacific website, click Korea as your preferred country and see what kind of deals they have. I got a friend a ticket for 350k return, inclusive of tax, last month.

and in this months newsletter they have deals to Hong Kong (limited seats and flights) for as low as 335k won. Flights to Taipei for as little as 224k.

I see you can do Korean Air from Pusan to Hong Kong for 270,000w return:

Fare (A1): KE PUSSEL Y fare KRW 130000
Fare (A2): KE SELPUS Y fare KRW 130000
Tax: Rep. of Korea Passenger Service Charge KRW 9000
Tax: KE YQ surcharge $1.80
Total for 1 adult passenger: KRW 270800
(as of Wednesday, April 2, 2008)

Oddly, Pusan-Seoul-Hong Kong gets you that price. Seoul-Hong Kong? Much more expensive.

Nothing odd about that, really.

They have other costs - the bigger the airport, the higher the parking / landing fee. Especially if it's during peak hours. That's why you have some smaller / low cost airlines flying at odd hours (1am in the morning, for example) or flying to smaller, more local airports (like Ryan Air in the UK flying to and from Stansted Airport in London).

So they have to charge more flying out of big, international airports.

Plus they want to try and promote their routes out from more regional airports, too... so they are a bit cheaper.

www.072.com (www.ttangcheori.co.kr) offers short-notice tickets to Hong Kong on India Air for 224,000 won plus 88,000 won tax from Incheon. But it's non-extendable and good for three nights and only good on certain dates.

Also (though you may have received better advice already) consider talking with Angie Kim (excellent English speaker) at tourexpress.com, and don't rule out Guangzhou (CAN), though it's a tad bit farther away from Hong Kong than Shenzhen.

A quick online check of the tourexpress.com site (requires basic Korean skills) shows that KAL will get you to-and-from Shenzhen for 110,460 won this coming weekend--CHEAP! Of course they'll clap on airport tax and you'll need a China visa (I think) if traveling overland into HK--these expenses will mount up.

Lo and behold, KAL offers the same fare to Guangzhou, with Asiana asking a tad bit more. Shenzhen's closer to your destination, though.

I say either reserve a spot online now, or call Angie Kim. She's the best.
