I have one student in my 1st grade high school class, who can't read AT ALL. I don't even think he knows the alphabet, but he's on the canoe team? Or rowing team or some other b.s, that's his excuse.

Should I just let him sit there like a stump? Cuase I"m thinking I should...

If he's one of those serious athletes, then he probably doesn't know much in any of his classes. As long as he isn't disruptive, just let him vegetate if wants, otherwise try engaging him in some simple conversations. Very very simple.

My school takes ssirrim pretty seriously and we have students transfer in from other places to "study" here. I rarely see them. They don't wear school uniforms, don't attend many classes, and eat separately prepared food.

My MS has a soccer team that gets "privileges" some of them participate at a high level others are hopeless. I stress that Park Ji Sung can speak English.

So I goad them into participating a bit.

My other school has a boxing team, they take their studies quite seriously.

Canoe team? What is this: Phillips Andover Academy? I've never heard of a school canoeing team in Korea.

My school has a synchronised jump-rope team. You'd be surprised what you and and don't find at Korean schools.

He doesn't say a peep all class......F'em I'll let him sit there like a bump on a log. I don't have time for one "special" student who doesn't even know the alpahbet.

Good thing Korea is a major contender with their canoing team in the Olympics Rolling Eyes

So, with 36 to 40 students in your ps high school class, you've noticed that ONE isn't really participating?

My hat's off you, darkness. Korea needs more teachers like you. Very Happy Laughing Very Happy

Ya, I get up there I do a lil jig, I sing a lil song, I tip my top hat, then I proceed with a tap dance.

No, some don't pay attention, maybe 4-8 out of 30, but most of the time I have their attention.

I was getting them all to read aloud, and he just stood there...so I asked "does he know how to read?"
The response I got was
"he is canoer"

"what? He's on a sports team?"

students: "yeah"

"well I don't care what he does, can or can't he read?"

"He can't" the students replied

"awesome...have a sit down"

Well, you can at least show the kid some kindness. He's either got a learning disability or is retarded. Take some extra time to get to know him a bit before or after class. Maybe you can figure out what's going on.

Either way, be kind. Imagine how hard life must be for the guy. You might just figure out a way to teach him.

It's so much easier when there is a retarded girl in class. The other girls often take care of her.

Oh ya right, I feel SSSSOOOO bad for him. You get to be a trophy for the school cause you're on some glorified "rowing" team...wtf.

Screw that kid, just cause you can row a boat (where, I dont have a clue!) doesn't mean I'm going to give him a handout in my class.

For the record, he's not retarded, or does he seem to have a learning disability except for the fact, he doent' have to do anything. He's just Englishee retarded....

The non-verbal retarded kid(who is really cute, elementry 4th grade?) at my school, gets mocked by the other students
"Teacher, she babo-no englishee no hangul-ma. Hahaha"
Actually they only did that once, the 5th grader found out how far I can punt an idiot...
