Has anyone been to Mokpo? I'm thinking of going for the weekend on KTX. Any opinions? |

Its awesome. You can catch a ferry to Hongdo or Haksando. Both are great islands. If the weather is rough they cancel but you can still catch the big boat that goes to cheju-do. The big boat is in the terminal next door.
If your planning on having Hoe Korean Sashimi you might want to bring a friend as you'll look strange being the only foreigner in the restaurant eating a full plate of sashimi . |

Oops, I hope I'm not hijacking this thread, but does anyone know how the swimming is at the beaches around Mokpo (or anywhere along the Yellow Sea coast of South Korea, for that matter)? I plan on bringing my bathing suit along if and when I get to the ROK, but I'm just hoping to get a head's up on what the beach scene is like there now. Thanks. |

I can't see it being any good. No sandy shores. Just squid boats and harbours. You'll have to go to Pusan or Cheju-do if you want to swim. |

Gosh, thanks Fishead soup! That is good to know so that I don't miss out on all of the beach action there in Korea. I had read that Hongdo or Haksando might be where this nature preserve is located, so I thought there might also be pristine beaches there. However, I kind of had mixed thoughts about it still since the Yellow Sea doesn't exactly seem like mankind's most endearing example of respect for the environment and Earth. Do you know what effect the oil spill off the Taean province a while back might have had on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula?
I guess the islands off Mokpo (Shinan province, right?) are still fun to visit by ferry according to your response to the OP's question. I hope I get to try that! Thanks again for the info, and also for the input on Soraksan in a different thread. |

Korea isn't really a place to go for beaches. There's one in Pusan. Most beaches are incredably crowded. The one in Pusan is best described as Pattaya without the naughty nightlife. So many people you can't see the sand. The ajuma's charge you 10 thousand won for an umbrella and beach towel. and if you decide to take a walk you lose it. If you're really into a beach scene. Go to Krabi in Thailand or the Phillipines.
The Islands off Mokpo are famous for rock formations. You can take a ferry around the island it's really spectacular. They stop at one point and some fisherman bring some live fish on the boat and people eat them raw.
Another good place to visit is Ulleongdo. It's way better than Cheju-do.
Way more laid back and much less commercial |
