Okay, I have just now been told by my co-teacher that form 8802 from the United States Internal Revenue Service needs to be filed with my home country in order to receive my pension refund. The IRS will then mail me a from in return which my school must have to issue me my pension refund, I'm told. This must be done "as soon as possible", I'm told.

Between the IRS's return times and the fact that the IRS seems to want my W-2s for the three months in 2007 that I actually worked in America---- W2s I don't have and will have to request---, AND they want me to send them a check or money order containing American funds, which will require me to wire money home, which I won't even have a chance to do until next week---- I'll be lucky if I get these supposedly required documents in the next two months.

Does any other American teacher know how this works, or whether the docs are really required for pension refund?

If this is regular pension through regular Korean pension system, you do NOT need any IRS form...

If you are in the public school system they probably want it for your Korean income tax exemption / tax refund (you don't pay Korean taxes for the 1st two years).

It has nothing to do with pension. Your school doesn't apply for your pension refund - you do - at the pension office. All you need are your ARC number, passport, one way exit ticket and a place (bank account) for them to send the money to.

OK, it's not pension refund. Nobody else on my jobsite seemed sure.

Okay, so if I don't get taxed any way in the first two years, why do I need to fill it out ASAP? I've been in Korea exactly a year, and I've been working at this school for only eight months.

As an American you are only exempt if you have an 8802 on file. Otherwise they may (will) come after you for the unpaid taxes.
