Hey, I'm considering moving to Korea for let's say a good while. Now I know that bringing a cat to Korea is possible but does anyone know how much red tape I'll have to go through in order to do it? Also has anyone done it from Canada before? And does anyone know what the cost of it is? Thanks.

It is not diffcult. Look at PETTRAVEL.COM for all the customs and airlines information.

I did some research...I'm not sure about the costs though.
Contact your local vet and the Korean embassy in Toronto

For Korean Air

For Air Canada

I'm planning on going sometime in the summer and bringing my cat...
I want to use Korean Airlines because they allow for pets to be in the cabin(you will read it in the first link).

Shame on me, but my cat has never been to the vet. Is this going to be a problem?

You might get an extra fee for under $50, but I doubt it.

You need to take him/her to the vet for the required shots and then they can probably recommend a cheaper pet carrier.
Im hoping anyway

Thanks for the info. A bit of a pain in the arse but hopefully everything will turn out fine and it'll be worth it.

I'm hoping it is under 300 or slightly more.

Just make sure your cat is welcome anywhere you intend to live vis a vis the landlord. Cats are not well-loved in Korea--to put it mildly--they don't like them. And make sure that it doesn't ever get out of your dwelling.

Personally, I wouldn't bring a cat to Korea given how easily one can find oneself out of a job and without an apt.

Working in Korea isn't always so stable for expats.

It sure will, your cat needs to be seen by a vet and given a rabies certificate (at least 30 days before you leave)OR it will be put into quarintine and you don't want that! You should also be aware that parvo and distemper are EVERYWHERE here, so you should probably get him his shots.

To take him in cabin on Korean Air he has to weight less than 11pds including a soft sided carrier.

I understand what you're saying. I have to be extra careful if I attempt to do this.

The Korean Air fee will be $220. The KA staff are very helpful. Phone ahead and try to book seat J54 or J53. These seats have extra space beside them for pet kennels so that you don't have to have it under your feet. I believe you are going to have a 17 hour flight from Ontario so make sure to put a little catnip in your carry-on, or talk to your vet about petcalm (or another natural product) that will just keep the little guy totally relaxed. If your cat and carrier is over 11lbs though then as one poster said you will have to have him ride in the special cargo area. Last time I was flying with my dogs there was a guy from Seoul flying with his two cats in the cargo area and they seemed fine on the other end. Just throw a big blanket into the carrier so your cat can snuggle for the entire ride.

Do you mean the actual bag? I bought a sherpa for $60 I think. The flight fees for taking pets is the same whether the pet is in the cabin with you or in the special cargo area.

I thought that the pet was suppose to be in a cage that is good enough for them to stand up and slightly move around in.

For riding in the cabin you will need to have a soft-sided carrier. Your pet still needs to be able to stand up to at least it shoulders in it though.
