Hello all,
I'm planning on heading to Korea to teach after this summer. I have my BA in English, my teacher cert, and my MA in Ed. (TESL/TEFL). I was a talking head in Japan with the JET program for three years (which I know doesn't count for much apart from the experience of living abroad) and I've now worked 2 1/2 years at the intensive English program here at the University of Colorado at Denver. I'm not worried about getting a job for myself, but my girlfriend would like to tag along. She has no teaching qualifications or experience, and she has no degree, but would like to earn a bit of money while we're there so that I don't support her, and also so that she has something to occupy her time. Does anyone have any ideas about how she might make some money in Korea? She doesn't have any teaching qualifications or experience, and so it wouldn't have to be anything related to teaching. However, considering she has an excellent grasp of the English language, can write well, and is socially plesant, could she survive/support herself by just doing privates? How feasible is this idea?
Thanks in advance for all input.
Regards,
Eric Hall |

I know a guy who is making over 4 million won/month doing only privates, although it is illegal and i don't condone that behavior. |

You see very few westerners at the soup kitchens. I assume even the uneducated ones can make 4 million a month after they network themselves. Poor buggers. |

...and, dude, get your girl in school. Unless she's a supermodel, you may need an upgrade. |

Unless things have changed without my knowing, the standard rate is 40,000 won per hour. How much can she make from that? That depends on how much she is willing to work and how much work she can find.
There are lots of privates advertised on internet job sites, but perhaps even more are through connections and networking.
One problem with privates is that they usually require lots of transportation time- for example, you'll do an hour at one place, ride the subway for thirty minutes to get to the next place, then wait around at that place in a cafe for another thirty minutes until the next one starts. If you include all that extra time, 40,000 no longer looks as good as it did.
But after a month or so she should have a bunch of privates, and if she does, say, three hours a day four days a week she's doing well enough to support herself comfortably (provided you're supplying accomodation).
BTW make sure it's in cash- any investigation would involve checking her bank account.
Disclaimer: private lessons, especially for people on tourist visas, are illegal in the Land of the (Sparklingly?) Great Han People. I in no way condone them and am not responsible for any negative consequences of the advice given above being applied. |

I hope not.
It's illegal and she'd be putting herself at serious risk.
I know people who've done it for years, but they always walk that fine tight-rope. |

Private tutoring is illegal in Korea unless you are on an F-series (Korean ancestory or married to a Korean) visa.
There is a dedicated thread to the topic of discussing LEGAL private tutoring here:
