How did it feel initially? How does it feel now to have escaped this pollution infested rathole of a country?
Was it a feeling of exhilaration? of joy? Do anyone of you actually miss it? |

| I swore to myself on the airplane as it was taking off out of Incheon the "morning" of my "midnight" run that I would NEVER come back here ever again. Sure enough, 8 months later I was back and have been here since. |

I miss it. Nine times out of ten I didn't want to be there. But like furniture in a mass rapists cell you get to love your little comforts...gimchi, green money, girls, until it gets to the point that even in Heaven you nudge against St.Peters skirt and wonder if he'll sneak Outback for a 'little meat'.
You never escape Korea, just like you never escape your past. |

I sometimes feel like a man who has been released from jail after 8 years. "Oh, is that what cars look like now?" "You mean I don't have to spit on my food to keep other people from eating it?" |

Yeah, it is stressful in Korea. It is polluted. The pace of life is breakneck, and always dealing with things from a different culture's perspective can give anyone a severe headache. Sometimes I wonder why I stay.
I often reflect up on this on my one-month vacations in Bali, Thailand, or the Philippines, or during the other month off before I head back to class again. I really only work 6 months a year. Every time I'm back in my hometown for a month, I talk about this with people I know, at least on the weekends, which is when they have time.
Sometimes, though, during the semester, I spend some time touching base with friends using SKYPE. I don't have to worry about the time difference usually, because I don't have to work the next day. And if it gets to be too much, I can always rely on my network of friends here. We'll get together on Friday afternoons at a pub sometimes. Why? Because we can. We don't work on Fridays.
And then it hits me. Living abroad isn't for everyone. That's why I can make what I make, live in the apartment where I live, bank what I bank, and vacation where I vacation. Thanks, OP, for helping to make my life more rewarding.
I'll give you 10 to 1 that you'll find problems no matter where you go. |

Including Korea I have lived in 6 countries in my life; Korea is the only one I genuinely hate. Sure there problems in the others but as I said earlier: Korea takes the cake.
I have lived abroad for over 10 years; I have no problems living abroad. Just in Korea and that says a lot. |

The only thing I miss about Korea is the pizza. Yes, you heard that right, the pizza. Some of the best pizza I have ever had was in Korea. The toppings and combinations are outstanding. I know those are fighting words, but I seriously loved the pizza.
In terms of infrastructure Korea is great. The transportation system in Seoul is clean, cheap, and efficient. The health care is pretty good, at least in my experience. The problem is the mood of the place. It's just seems oppresive and miserable. Even though it has material wealth and modern amenities, the place just lacks a soul. Koreans treat one another much worse than they treat foreigners.
Some people on this board will say that if you hate Korea, you will hate everywhere you go or that you just can't hack living abroad. That is bull because I am proof that is not true. The locals in a foreign country are really what make the difference. Korea is just not a friendly place, overall. (of course there are some great Koreans, I met a few of them. I am just saying overall, an average, it is by far the least friendly country I have ever been to, and I have been to many) |

Very true and good on you for calling them on their BS. I have lived in and enjoyed other countries previous to Korea. The thing is, those selfsame people who say that if you don't like Korea you are not made for living abroad, are usually the same folks who left North America (usually Canadians and Americans) who went to Korea and never left. They believe themselves to be expats extraordinaires, having spent several years in Korea, making them experts in expat life and believe their experiences in Korea are applicable to all other countries...
They have been here too long and as one of the posters had indicated, all they can talk about is how much they are banking and how much holiday time they have. Notice that is all the speak of. They never talk about the fantastic landscapes, the interesting people, the beautiful architecture, etc. Bank and Holiday. Yes, those things are indeed available in Korea but the lack of soul and vitality of the place is spirit crushing and that's when one can say, money truly isn't everything. |
